Steve Barrett Returns From Military Commitment To Find Speedy Surprise Waiting At Waterford Speedbowl

When Waterford Speedbowl Street Stock division driver Steve Barrett left for the Middle East last June as part of his military commitments with the National Guard’s 1109th TASMG unit he didn’t have a racecar left.

Barrett’s car had been left beyond repair after an April 2012 crash at the Speedbowl.

Saturday, Barrett, who recently returned from duty in the Middle East, was presented with a new car courtesy of the Racers for a Soldier group put together by a group of those involved in the Speedbowl racing community.

The Racers for a Soldier project was led by Jeff Winsor of Moosup. Through fund raising efforts over the last 10 months, the group was able to complete the building of a new car for Barrett.

Barrett wasted no time in returning to competition Saturday at the Speedbowl. He went on to finish 11th in the 50-lap Street Stock feature.
