When The Focus On Rewarding Last Place Hurts Competition Overall

Last month NASCAR and Whelen Modified Tour title sponsor Whelen announced increases coming to the division for the 2025 season.

NASCAR announced increases across the board in purses for individual events and a 250 percent increase in the point fund payout for the 2025 season.

This week NASCAR offered a look behind the curtain of what those increases represent in a distribution to teams.

Those numbers offered some interesting looks at how things will be going forward.

  1. lmfao. Always gotta find a way to poo poo on what the tour does in these parts.

If they made it 30k to win and 200 to start instead, you would be saying how no one but the top 5 or so guys will bother to show up.

I promise you, no one in a battle for 10th is going to be thinking about the extra money they would get no matter what distribution they use.

    • Zig,
Not trying to find a way to poo poo andything. I didn’t have to try to find that opinion. As stated in what you heard, I applaud NASCAR for the efforts being made. That said, I think there’s a lot of differing opinion as far as the distribution of purse money and how that works. I’ve had a few owners/drivers tell me they don’t care about the money distribution, they’re out there competing to finish the best they can no matter what. But, I’ve also had a few drivers and team owners tell me they hate it when finishing fifth and finishing 15th means little to no difference in the ultimate “award” for the day. I think this is a topic that has quite a few people on both sides of the argument.

  2. Opposing view. Disparities between finishing position does not promote competition. High amounts to start have the best chance of getting more cars to the track. For the majority that race it’s a recreational activity that’s fulfilling, exciting that you enjoy with like minded people. Passing a car on the track is about the drivers calculation they can affect a pass in relationship to the car in front of them. Getting X amount more dollars not part of that calculation for the vast majority since wrecking a car not capable of making the pass far more expensive then a few hundred dollars.
