Mike Joy kicks off his 25th season in the booth with Fox Sports’ NASCAR coverage coming up Sunday at the NASCAR Cup Series Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray.
We got a chance today to talk with Mike about the top storylines in Cup Series racing this year, sharing the booth Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick, what he thinks about the Clash being at Bowman Gray and Bowman Gray’s place representing short track racing, the divide between grassroots racers and top level NASCAR divisions, Ryan Preece’s move to RFK Racing and more.
We talked a lot about the presence of Bowman Gray as part of such a special Cup Series event and what it could mean for short track racing overall.
“I think we have to look at this event as an opportunity to create awareness [for grassroots] racing,” Joy said. “But it seems there are so many stumbles along the way. For example, I was really excited when NASCAR announced that the Bowman Gray Modifieds would be part of the weekend program. What a great opportunity to showcase Tim Brown and Burt Myers and Frank Fleming, all the guys that race there on a weekly basis. Then I learned they’re going to make them practice Saturday morning, they’re going to race Saturday noon and get out of there. Well, is anybody going to be there? Come on? It’s like running the Modifieds at Loudon at about the time my alarm clock goes off, but don’t get me started on that.”

Nice to see Mike not spreading any Joy when it comes to Bowman Gray in spite of the fact his harsh comments may be counter to NASCAR’s involvement with the track. Perfectly understandable in view of his son’s experience there. He grew up at a time modified racing had matured with better cars and more emphasis on racing vs entertainment. Were he t have grown up in the 60’s he may appreciate more the importance of the smash bang entertainment value and how it was responsible for the sport taking root in the first place.
On another note wondering how the forum participants feeling about the topic discussed in this link.

Racecars use electric motors to power peripheral parts to not take away power from the engine. I used to have electric racecars in my basement when I was a kid. Call me whatever you’d like, but I can’t comprehend any variance to that.
If the electrical power to run those peripherals comes from there alternator & battery, it comes from the power of the engine. That’s why some folks try to disconnect the alternator to get those few gerbils of power.
Dareal, that’ll work great until the batrtery dies…
Sorry for the typo, battery.
