Motorsports personality Garrett Mitchell (also known as Cleetus McFarland) confirmed on social media Thursday afternoon that former NASCAR Cup Series driver Greg Biffle was killed Thursday morning in a plane crash in Statesville, N.C.
Biffle, a former NASCAR Xfinity Series and Craftsman Truck Series champion and a 19-time NASCAR Cup Series winner, was 55 years old.
According to officials at Statesville Regional Airport, which is about 45 minutes north of Charlotte, the crash occurred around 10:15 am Thursday. The Cessna C550 that crashed was owned by Biffle.
“Unfortunately, I can confirm Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, and son Ryder were on that plane … because they were on their way to spend the afternoon with us,” Garrett Mitchell posted to Facebook at 1:25 pm Thursday. “We are devastated. I’m so sorry to share this.”
Former NASCAR star Kenny Wallace confirmed through social media that his former motorcoach driver, Craig Wadsworth, was also on the plane that crashed.
Biffle garned much attention following Hurricane Helene in September 2024, which devestated many areas in Western North Carolina. Biffle used his personal helicopter to deliver aid to areas that were unreachable for most emergency services. Mitchell also used his own helicopter to help with aid after the storm and he and Biffle became close. Biffle had been a regular competitor and attendee of events put on by Mitchell since September of 2024.
Biffle, a Vancouver, Washington native, last ran full-time in the Cup Series in 2016. He ran full-time in the Cup Series for 2003 to 2016 for RFK Racing (formerly Roush-Fenway Racing and Roush Racing).
Biffle’s best season in the Cup Series came in 2005 when he won six events and finished second in the standings behind Tony Stewart. Biffle was named one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers in 2023.
Biffle actually ended up competing at Stafford Speedway in multiple events in recent years.
Biffle ran in the inaugural SRX Series event on June 12, 2021 at Stafford Speedway. He finished second in the even to six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion in Doug Coby. Biffle also finished fifth when the SRX made its fourth appearance at Stafford on July 20, 2023.
Biffle returned to Stafford to run in the first New England 900 event put on by Cleetus McFarland on July 19, 2024. He finished 14th in that event. Biffle returned to Stafford for the second New England 900 on July 18. He finished second to NASCAR Cup Series driver and former Stafford Speedway regular Ryan Preece.
