Banta Racing: Thompson Speedway Limited Sportsman Division

The Team: A decade plus of chasing a track title at Thompson Speedway reached its goal in 2013 at the track when Banta Racing celebrated a Limited Sportsman division with driver Steve Kenneway. The Norwich based team joined with Kenneway while already in the midst of the 2012 season. Kenneway entered the final race of the 2013 season with a 12-point lead over Jason Chicolas of Sutton, Mass. Kenneway suffered a flat tire early in the race but rallied to a sixth place finish to secure the division crown. Banta Racing has been fielding their Limited Sportsman at Thompson for the last 14 years. The team has recorded 36 wins during that span. Kenneway returned to the track for the team in 2014, finishing second in points in the division. The team and Kenneway parted ways amicably following the 2014 season. Diego Monahan of Quaker Hill will take over the reigns of the Banta Racing ride for 2015. The team may also compete part-time with the North East Street Stock Tour. The team will partner with John Volpe for the 2015 season in a sponsorship role through his businesses, Honest John’s Used Cars in North Branford and Big A Auto Parts in North Branford.

David Banta on the 2015 season: “Whether it be Rob’s SK [Modified] or Mark Panaroni in the Mini Stock or Al Stone III in the Street Stock, John is used to success and good looking cars and hopefully we’ll be able to uphold that. … Steve was great. He’s a great friend. He did as well as he could for us [in 2014] and we ended up second in the points. There was a problem with the car that we still truly haven’t found. Steve did as well as he could, but there’s some gremlins there that we have to try to fix. We’ll get there [on finding a driver]. It’s nothing pressing right now. We’ve got some people in mind and we’ll go from there. We started working on the car the week after the season ended. Corey [Hutchings] set the bar pretty high last year. We’ve got to get back there.”
