Dave Garbo Jr. Grabs Legends Win At Waterford; Russ Stoehr Takes NEMA Victory

WATERFORD – Dave Garbo Jr. of Stonington got a gift wrapped present of a victory in the Legends feature Sunday at the Waterford Speedbowl thanks to Giovanni Giarratana.

Giarratana bumped Dana DiMatteo out of the lead with eight laps remaining in the scheduled distance for the event. Giaratana was penalized to the rear of the field, handing the lead to the third place running Garbo. At that point officials decided to red-checker the caution-marred event.

“I was just trying to stay out of trouble,” Garbo said. “I know there was a lot going on in front. I was just kind of seeing what was going to happen with Dana and Giovanni there. It would have been a really good race if we didn’t have to stop.

Nicholas Sowa of Middletown was second. Paul Kusheba IV of Monroe was third and clinched the division championship.

Russ Stoeher of Bridgewater, Mass. took the lead with 19 laps remaining and went unchallenged the rest of the way in winning the 25-lap Northeastern Midget Association feature.

It was the first victory of the season for Stoehr. Randy Cabral of Plymouth, Mass. was second and John Zych Jr. of Louisville, Ky. third.
