NASCAR Announces 14-Race Whelen Modified Tour Schedule For 2013

Events at Connecticut short tracks will once again make up more than half of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour schedule for the 2013.

Saturday morning in Charlotte NASCAR announced that the Whelen Modified Tour will have a 14-race schedule in 2013, with eight of those events to be contested at Connecticut tracks.

The division also ran a 14-race schedule in 2012 at the same seven tracks featured on the 2013 schedule.

Stafford Motor Speedway, which had already officially announced their Whelen Modified Tour event dates for 2013, will host the division four times.

Thompson International Speedway will go from hosting four events in 2012 down to three next season. The Waterford Speedbowl, which hosted the division for the first time since 2006 last season, will once again host one event.

The most noticeable change on the schedule is the disappearance of the North-South Showdown. The event, which brought the Whelen Modified Tour and Whelen Southern Modified Tour together on one card, had been run the past two years in early September at Thompson.

The second change to the schedule adds a second event for 2013 at Riverhead (N.Y.) Raceway.

“Modified fans are some of the most passionate in motorsports,” George Silbermann, NASCAR vice president, regional and touring series said in a release from NASCAR. “The 2013 calendar will give them plenty of opportunities to enjoy the stars, cars, and the tremendous excitement of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.”

The 2013 Whelen Modified Tour season will open April 14 at Thompson International Speedway as part of the track’s Icebreaker weekend and close the season on Oct. 20 at Thompson with the World Series weekend. The division will also run on Thursday Aug. 15 at Thompson.

The second event of the season will be at Stafford (April 28), part of the Spring Sizzler card at the track. The penultimate event of 2013 will be part of the Fall Final event at Stafford on Sept. 29. Stafford will also hold Friday night events on May 24 and Aug. 2.

The Waterford Speedbowl will welcome the series for a Saturday evening event on June 22. The season unofficially begins with the inaugural UNHO Battle at Beach non-points event on a specially built short track at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 19.

  2. Jimmy Scholtz says

Glad to see them back at Waterford next year, what a great show they put on the last time they were there. The place was packed for the Evans 161, great story!

  3. Sweet!

  4. No Martinsville ?!?!

  5. Jimmy Scholtz says

Wow you are right, I hadn't noticed no Martinsville no Dover either unless they are just on the South tour schedule only this year?

  6. Rich Wisniewski says

Shouldn't be a suprise they're not running Martinsville as they haven't for a couple years now. As for Dover, I never even heard a rumer of them ever running there…

  7. Rich Wisniewski says

They haven't run Martinsville for a while now so no surprise there. As for Dover, I never even heard a rumor of them going there unless I missed something.

  8. Jimmy Scholtz says

Yes Rich, you missed something, they have been at Dover the last 2 years that I remember. Ron Silk won it this year and Ryan Newman won the year before that. To bad you missed it, those cars on that track is wild! Check it out on U-Tube.

  9. Jimmy Scholtz says

STOP THE PRESSES…..I just realized my mistake…WOW what an idiot…I meant BRISTOL not Dover, Thanks Rich, and my apologies.

  10. Rich Wisniewski says

I think you have your tracks mixed up. You must be talking about Bristol not Dover lol.

  11. Rich Wisniewski says

Hey, no problem lol and they are going to Bristol in August.

  12. Jimmy Scholtz says

Right again..maybe I should just shut up! OK, no Martinsville Nascar's oldest track to. Modifieds are the oldest division in Nascar seems like a natural. What do I know?

  13. THEY are looking for venues to expand because a 14 races schedule is kinda very thin. they had a good place to race at Delaware in Ont. to run or even Kawartha in Ont. but somehow these guys seems to have some kind of problems getting a passport or at least an enhance drivers license to go across the border and years after years they are running the same old same old and wondering what is the problems with the series…………

  14. IDK if it was a passport issue…..I think it was more of a cost issue……doesn't pay enough for us to do the 11 hour drive, hotels and all the other stuff that goes with it.

  15. Oswego? Shangri-la II? Lancaster? Spencer? just saying….

  16. Plattsburg Ny… Nice track up there …

  17. Airborne Speedway … Nice track …

  18. tu cut the cost down they have to do it right schedule 2 races on the same w/e. ISMA just did it with Delaware on August 16 in Ont. and they move-on to Sunset Speedway on the 18. well Muffy when that race in Delaware was first announced there was already a lot of bitching going-on because of the Passport stuff. i know there was a lot of bad decisions that was taken over the years as far as the Tour goes but did you guys out priced your self where NOBODY can book you without a slim chance to make some money ??? i am sure that a good numbers of speedway are interested but probably putting the brakes in scheduling the Tour. don't get me wrong i really love the Modifieds when you have NHIS cutting the purse there must be a reason………
