Special SK Modified Event Highlights Boston Louie Memorial Show Card Sunday At Seekonk Speedway

Typically this time of year, the racing weekend for SK Modified drivers around Connecticut starts on Thursday and ends on Saturday.

But that’s not the case this weekend.

Sunday at Seekonk Speedway in Seekonk, Mass., the Boston Louie Memorial Northeastern Midget Association event takes center stage on the racing card, but a special SK Modified event has created a buzz.

Sunday’s card at Seekonk will include a 75-lap, $5,000 to win SK Modified event that is expected to attract some very well known names locally.

Event promoter Gary Sagar said he expects about 30 SK Modified teams at Seekonk on Saturday.

“I have a lot of guys that want to come out and are just waiting to see how they get through their weekly racing events this weekend,” Sagar said.

Sagar said he has commitments from all three Connecticut short track reigning SK Modified champions (Ted Christopher – Stafford Motor Speedway, Ryan Preece – Thompson International Speedway, Tyler Chadwick – Waterford Speedbowl).

He said he also has commitments from reigning Whelen Modified Tour champion and Stafford Speedway SK Modified regular Doug Coby, former NASCAR Whelen All-American Series short track national champion Keith Rocco, former Whelen Modified Tour regular Matt Hirschman and former Waterford Speedbowl champion and now Valenti Modified Racing Series regular Jeff Pearl.

It will mark the first SK Modified type event run at Seekonk since 1983. Seekonk Speedway annually holds a $10,000 to win Tour Type Modified event in July.

“This is a great warmup if any of these guys in the SK’s want to come back in July for the $10,000 show,” Sagar said. “Matt Hirschman won that race last year in an SK [Modified]. When you look at the three Connecticut tracks, you need a good motor at all three of them. At Seekonk you don’t need a big motor. Actually, a big motor can be a detriment. You’ve got to have a good handling racecar otherwise you’re out to lunch.”

Also on the card Sunday is the 29-lap NEMA Boston Louie Memorial along with the 29-lap NEMA Lites event. The card is rounded out with a 50-lap Northeast Mini Stock Tour feature and a 25-lap event for the Pro Four Modifieds.
