WATERFORD – It’s a name quite familiar to racing fans across the spectrum of short track racing.

Mention the last name Christopher in short track racing circles in New England and the stories of success are endless.

Between them, Ted Christopher and his twin brother Mike Christopher have accomplished about all there is to accomplish behind the wheel of Modified race cars.

Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl it was the next generation of the family celebrating his first short track victory.

Fifteen year old Mike Christopher Jr. survived a mass of late restarts to win the 25-lap Legends feature Saturday at Waterford.

“It’s huge,” said Mike Christopher Jr., who is in his second season in the Legends division at Waterford. “It’s awesome because of all the fame that my dad and uncle have gotten. It’s just great. I’m at a loss for words.”

Over and over again the race looked ready to finish, only to have another caution come out after the white flag.

Mike Christopher Jr., wearing a firesuit worn by his uncle Ted Christopher in the 2008 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, pointed to the patch for the race after winning.

“I’d go to the white flag and then go to turn one and see the yellow,” Mike Christopher Jr. said. “Then I’d see it again and again and again. The suit says it all, the 24 hours and that’s what it was tonight. … I was thinking about running out of gas. I had it in fifth gear coasting around. I was thinking if another green-white-checkered came out would someone pass me. You think about a lot of things when you’re in the lead and laps are winding down.”
