WATERFORD – Last year the goal for Keith Rocco and his Scott Fearn owned Late Model team at the Waterford Speedbowl was to win a championship in their first full-time season competing at the track.

Mission accomplished.

Could perfection be the goal for 2014?

Rocco says that’s too high an expectation, but the results of the season so far belie his opinion at this point.

Rocco rolled easily to victory in the 30-lap Late Model feature Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl. It was the third victory in three Late Model division events this year at Waterford for Rocco, of Wallingford.

Bruce Thomas Jr. of Groton was second and Jason Palmer of Berlin third.

“It’s pretty good,” Rocco said. “We’ve got the new tire figure out. It seems like we practiced once and made a bunch of changes and got the car figured out with that new tire. … Your luck and everything can topple upside down at any minute. Right now we’re going to enjoy it the way it is.”

Asked if he thought he could win every race in the division this season, Rocco was quick to say no.

“I know we’ve got a great team and all, but some things like that are impossible,” Rocco said.

Rocco went to the lead past Thomas on a restart with 24 laps remaining and never trailed again.

“I wasn’t close,” Thomas said. “… That thing is on rails. I’ve got to keep plugging away on my car and make it better.”
