WATERFORD – A fast car and good setup was big for Randy Churchill Jr. Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl, but a fill-in set of eyes in the sky proved huge for the Oakdale driver.

Churchill fended off multiple challenges by Glenn Griswold over the final 15 laps to win the 25-lap SK Light Modified feature Saturday at the Waterford Speebdowl.

Griswold, of Vernon, held on for second and Corey Barry of Plainfield was third.

Churchill’s normal spotter, Mike Serluca was not at the track for Saturday’s feature. Churchill had crew member Aaron Edie spotting for him from the pit area, but early in the event, Nate Thomas grabbed a headset in the grandstands and got on the radio with Churchill.

Thomas regularly spots for brother Bruce Thomas Jr. in the Late Model division, which was the next feature on the schedule after the SK Light Modified race.

“Someboday handed Nate a headset and told him to take over,” Churchill said.

And the extra eyes were exactly what Churchill needed over the final 15 laps, as Griswold gave the leader everything he could handle to the checkered flag.

“Glenn was really tough,” said Churchill, who started fourth. “I had a spotter today that let me know every move he was trying to make, whether it was working or not. I knew that he was only better than me in the center of the corner so that helped a lot. I was just a little easier on entry and really hard off and it paid off. … Nate’s a really good spotter. Bruce is really lucky to have him.”

Griswold was looking to complete a perfect weekend after winning the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature Friday at Stafford Motor Speedway.

“I had to start way in the back,” said Griswold, who started 10th. “But we’ll get him. He’s a fun competitor to be racing around.”
