Longtime local short track racer Danny Field died Wednesday after battling cancer since last fall.

Field, of Deep River, was 56 years old.

Around the ovals at the Waterford Speedbowl and Thompson Speedway, Field was long known for his dominating prowess in the Mini Stock divisions.

The driver know as “The Wild And Patient Man” won three Mini Stock championships at the Waterford Speedbowl, in 2005, 2006 and 2009. He also won Mini Stock division championships at Thompson Speedway in 2008 and 2011 and a championship on the Northeast Mini Stock Tour in 2012.

“Danny was a racer that many looked up to,” Waterford Speedbowl owner Terry Eames said. “He was very good at winning races, but, more importantly, he was a gentleman and family man. The entire Speedbowl community mourns his loss.”

Said Thompson Speedway general manager Josh Vanada: “All of us at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park are saddened to hear about the passing of Danny Field. Danny was a past champion here, and was well respected throughout the garage area. The motorsports community is a tight-knit group, and when one hurts, we all hurt. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Tammy, his family, friends, and all those affected by this loss.”

Waterford Speedbowl management and competitors will pay tribute to Field during their event on Saturday. Flags will be lowered to half staff and a moment of silence will precede the night’s racing card. The 25-lap Mini Stock feature will pace the track before the start in the missing man formation, with the pole position open in memory of Field.

  1. This is sad to hear. I remember when he did the pit party’s. He singed an autograph and always looked up at me and said. “Are you still sitting up on top behind the fly stand?” And I would say “Yup, Good luck today Danny.” It meant a lot to me that a driver new ware 1 race fan out of so many still sat. I will miss him and that red number 18 run around the bowl. Rest in peace Danny Field. Thank you for all the smiles. My thoughts and prays to the family.

So sorry to hear this news. I got to know Danny pretty well during his days running with the Late-Models. I always knew he had talent, and was glad to see him become so successful with the mini stocks!

Pitiful only 4 plus minutes of video for a man who won championships. Guess the camera
man has other cars to videos tape

  4. Very sad to hear of Danny’s passing. I had the privilege to meet and get to know Danny as a competitor. Danny was a very talented driver and was always a gentleman on and off the track. There are many drivers competing today that could have learned a great deal from Danny, you don’t need to drive dirty to be a champion. He always raced hard but clean, he would wear you down or make you make a mistake. The local racing community as well as his family has lost a real gentleman.
