On Tap Rics 286 BoxThe first three-day racing weekend of the 2014 short track season has arrived.

After going dormant following the April 5-6 Icebreaker weekend, Thompson Speedway rumbles back to life Thursday.

On Friday Stafford Motor Speedway officials look to bounce back from a rain out with three extended distance events on the schedule.

And the train keeps rolling Saturday night with the Waterford Speedbowl putting the SK Light Modifieds in the spotlight with an extra distance race sponsored by RH2Way.

Where: Thompson International Speedway

What: NASCAR Whelen All-American Series event

When: Thursday

Schedule: 30-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified, 20-lap Late Model (2), 10-lap Late Model, 20-lap Limited Sportsman, 18-lap Mini Stock and TBA-lap SK Light Modified.

More: The second event of the season at Thompson and the first of five weekly events in 2014. … The spotlight is on the Late Model division Thursday as they will run a special segment event. The division will first run two 20-lap features, with each event earning points for the track standings. They will close out the night with a 10-lap sprint that will determine the night’s overall winner and who collect’s the $1,200 winner’s purse. A driver’s will be awarded points corresponding to their finishing position in each of the three events. The driver with the lowest amount of points after all three events will be crowned the night’s overall winner. … Keith Rocco won the track’s season opening SK Modified division event on April 6. … The Mini Stock division will run 18 laps instead of their customary 15 laps. The change is honor of former division champion Danny Field, who passed away last week. Field campaigned the No. 18 Mini Stock. … Thompson Speedway will be partnering with ACCESS Agency Food Bank and TEEG to host Food Bank Night Thursday. The track will offer a $2 discount on tickets for that evening’s racing card to anyone that brings a can of non-perishable food for donation to ACCESS and TEEG. The track will also be accepting donations at the event for basket giveaways with items from local businesses and sponsors for donation to ACCESS. … For more information, check the Thompson Speedway website.

Schedule: 40-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified, 60-lap Late Model, 22-lap SK Light Modified, 20-lap Limited Late Model, 20-lap DARE Stock and 20-lap Legends. Grandstands open: 5:15 p.m.; Qualifying: 6:15 p.m.; Features: Immediately following qualifying.

More: The third event of the season at Stafford Motor Speedway. Last week’s racing card was rained out. … The Late Model, SK Light Modified and DARE Stock divisions will each have extended distance events on Friday. The Late Models will go 60 laps in an Xtra Mart Xtra D event that had originally been scheduled for last week. The SK Light Modifieds will run go 22 laps as part of the RH2Way Going The Extra Mile weekend. The DARE Stocks will go an extra fives laps as part of their Xtra Mart Xtra D showcase. … Ryan Preece won for the second consecutive event in the SK Modified division on May 2. Preece, the 2011 SK Modified champion at Stafford had a division-high eight victories at the track in 2013, but came up two points short of a championship. … After only two events, Preece is already pulling away from the field in the standings, with a 12-point lead over second place Ted Christopher. Doug Coby is third in the standings, 16 points behind. Four drivers, Keith Rocco, Matt Galko, Todd Owen and Dan Avery, are tied for fourth, 24 points behind Preece. … On May 2, reigning Late Model division champion Adam Gray picked up his first victory of the season. He was second in the first race of the year. Schedule: 35-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified, 30-lap Late Model, 25-lap Street Stock, 25-lap Mini Stock, 28-lap SK Light Modified and 25-lap Legends. Grandstands open: 3 p.m.; Qualifying: 4:30 p.m.; Features: 7 p.m.

More: The sixth event of the season at the shoreline oval. … Last week, Kyle James rolled to his first victory of the season in the SK Modified feature, holding off Keith Rocco. James has a win and two third place finishes in five events this year. … In five SK Modified events this year Rocco has two wins and three second place finishes. … Tyler Chadwick and Ed Puleo are the other winners in the SK Modified division at Waterford this year. … Rocco holds a 40-point lead over second place Craig Lutz in the SK Modified division standings. Timmy Jordan is third, 56 points off the lead and Puleo is fourth, 67 points from the top of the standings. …. Rocco, who was also the track’s 2013 Late Model division champion, won last week in that division and has won all five Late Model events at the track in 2014. … With a victory in the season opening Valenti Modified Racing Series event at Waterford on April 13, Rocco has eight victories and three second place finishes 11 feature starts this year at Waterford. … Last week, Josh Galvin (Street Stocks) and Ken Cassidy Jr. (Mini Stocks) both won for the second consecutive week. … The SK Light Modified division will run a 28-lap feature as part of their RH2Way Going The Extra Mile feature. … For more information check the Waterford Speedbowl website.
