Thompson Notes: Robert Palmer Wins Shortened SK Light Mod Race; Chad Baxter Wins In Mini Stock

Thompson Speedway Long Narrow LogoTHOMPSON – Robert Palmer was in the perfect place when the rain started to fall Thursday at Thompson Speedway.

Palmer, of Lisbon, won his first career SK Light Modified feature at Thompson Speedway Thursday when the race was stopped after 12 of 20 scheduled laps because of rain.

Palmer had taken the lead a lap before from second place finisher Ryan Pellerin of Dayville.

Bob Vojtila of Southington was third.

Pellerin went to the front on lap 11 when then leader John Studley and second place Glenn Griswold wrecked together in turn three.

“We started out a little rough in the beginning,” Palmer said. “Everybody bottled up there and there was a little confusion. That’s alright, we came from the back and I just tried to survive that one. It looked a little rough up front. I just played it slow and off we go.”

The brief shower that hit the track to end the feature quickly passed and the track returned to features not long after.

Chad Baxter of Pascoag, R.I. won the 18-lap feature for the Mini Stock division. The division normally runs 15-lap features, but ran 18 laps in memory of former Mini Stock track champion Danny Field, who passed away last week after battling cancer. Joe Baxter of Pascoag, R.I. was second and Ed Field, of Deep River, younger brother of Danny Field, drove his brother’s Mini Stock to third place.

  1. Just a couple comments on the mini stock feature, what a great finish by Ed Field. If the weather situation had been better, I would have loved to see the track have Ed park behind the 21 at the start-finish line, and be interviewed by Matt Buckler.

On another note, and taking nothing away from either of the Baxter’s or Ed Field, hats off to Thompson and Scott Tapley for black flagging the 85 car. The 46 car led a bunch of laps and probably wins if the 85 doesn’t cut down his left rear in turn 4.
