Second Season: Opening The Gates For Weekly Racing At Thompson Speedway

Thompson Speedway Long Narrow LogoTHOMPSON – The chill of Icebreaker weekend back in early April was replaced by spring warmth and muggy air Thursday as Thompson Speedway re-opened for the 2014 season with the first of five weekly shows this season.

Thursday’s schedule at Thompson offered some interesting twists for the competition.

The Late Model division will actually run three events tonight. Two 20-lap points events followed by a 10-lap sprint. The finishing positions of each driver in each event will be added together with the lowest cumulative total earning the overall victory for the night.

Another twist on the evening for competition was scrapping the heat racing for the Limited Sportsman division and instead running European style qualifying. Cars were sent out on the track in groups for four-minute sessions with lap times during that session used to determine how the starting order for the feature will be set.

Instead of running their normal 15-lap feature, the Mini Stock division will run an 18-lap feature in honor of former Thompson Mini Stock division track champion Danny Field of Deep River, who passed away last week after battling cancer.

Before the night’s racing first year race director Scott Tapley was stern with competitors that any malicious contact on the track will be penalized swiftly and aggressively.

Tapley also specifically made clear to Late Model division competitors that any threats made off the track by competitors, including threats made through online forums, could be cause for penalty by track officials.
