THOMPSON – In the showdown of wily veteran of Thompson Speedway against track rookie it was the veteran winning the battle.
Glenn Boss of Danielson passed Jeff Smith on a lap 22 restart and went on to win the 25-lap Late Model feature Thursday at Thompson Speedway.
Nick Ladyga of Voluntown was second and Marc Curtis Jr. of Worcester, Mass. third.
Curtis led much of the early race action, but on lap 21, with Smith and Curtis battling out front, Rick Gentes went to the low lane in turn three under both of them. The move looked good until turn four when Gentes car kept skating up the track and into the wall.
It gave Smith, making his first appearance at the track this season, the lead with Curtis second and Boss third. Boss went to second on the ensuing restart before the caution flew again moments later to set up the decisive final restart.
Boss got by Smith in turn three for the lead following the restart and held the top spot the rest of the way. Smith was shuffled back to fifth over the closing laps.
“I’m glad we had that last restart. I missed a shift there,” Boss said. “My good friend Jeff Smith was on the inside of me. I knew he was a little tight so I figured we had one more chance and we got him. What an awesome racecar we had tonight.”
