Former Norwalk Hour motorsports reporter Charlie Mitchell will be honored as part of the Waterford Speedbowl’s Nostalgia Night Saturday.

Saturday’s 35-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified event will be known as the “Charlie Mitchell Memorial” event.

Mitchell was 74 when he passed away in Oct. 2012.

Mitchell, a Norwalk native, began working at the Norwalk Hour in 1969. He started in the news department but moved to covering sports in 1971 and began covering racing for the paper that year.

He retired from The Hour in 2001, though continued to contribute a regular motorsports column regularly well after “retiring.” Mitchell’s last column for the paper ran on Nov. 28, 2010.

“Racers past and present owe a lot to Charlie Mitchell and how he served our sport” Speedbowl owner Terry Eames said in a release. “When we were approached about this memorial, we were thrilled – honored, to take part in it”.

A special trophy will be presented to the winner of the Charlie Mitchell Memorial SK Modified race.
