WATERFORD – The moniker “Comeback Kid” fit Josh Galvin perfectly on Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.

When Galvin slipped out of the groove after a side-by-side battle for the lead with Al Stone III, it looked like hope was lost for another win.

But a late caution gave Galvin, of North Franklin, the opportunity he needed and he took full advantage.

Galvin passed Stone, of Durham, out of turn four on the last lap and held him off by inches at the checker to win the 25-lap Street Stock feauture Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.

It was the eighth victory of the season for Galvin.

“It’s never over,” Galvin said. “It’s never over until the very last lap. Al had us beat there. Those guys have been making leaps and bounds on that car and they show up flying every week.”

Monte Gibbs of Killingworth was third.

Stone and Galvin were embroiled in a race long battle at the front, with Stone holding the advantage most of the way.

Galvin did take the lead at the line briefly with 13 laps remaining, but Stone quickly went back the front.

After the final restart, Stone led at the line, but Galvin was able to take advantage in turn three on the final lap.

“It’s awesome to win on the outside,” Galvin said. “We’ve been by side-by-side before this year a few times and we’ve had contact and we can sort of read each other while we’re racing. He’s a class act. He knows where to put his car, he knows where to be and he knows where I’m going to be. It makes for really really good racing when you race somebody as good as Al.”

Said Stone: “We’re definitely happy with tonight. The car is 100 percent better than it was at the beginning of the year. We just keep gaining on it. It’s tough to lose it that way, but congrats to Josh. He deserves it. They’re definitely on top of their game.”
