STAFFORD – On July 18, Keith Rocco and Ryan Preece put on a show to remember for the fans at Stafford Motor Speedway.

For 26 laps the drivers battled side-by-side out front in a heated battle for victory. Unfortunately on that evening, contact between Preece and Rocco with just over two laps remaining, sent Rocco crashing and Preece to the penalty box.

Friday the two paired up once again and gave fans another show to remember, and one that ended with each on the podium.

And for Rocco, it marked his first celebration in 2014 in an SK Modified at Stafford.

After an 18-lap battle out front for the top spot, Rocco cleared Preece on lap 35 and drove to victory in the 40-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified feature Friday at Stafford.

“We keep picking at this car and every week we keep getting better and better,” said Rocco, of Wallingford. “It was to the point where I thought we may not get a win here at Stafford this year.

“It feels great. We’ve been working so hard at it. It used to be nothing to win a race here for us. We really had to work for this one.”

Preece, of Berlin, was second and Rowan Pennink of Huntingdon Valley, Pa. third.

Rocco went by Michael Gervais for the lead on lap 12. Preece went to second on lap 15 and was all over Rocco by lap 17.

From there Rocco and Preece went back to side-by-side battling at the front, swapping the lead back and forth numerous times, before Rocco got the clearing move with six laps remaining.

“We can run side-by-side as long as nobody makes a mistake,” Rocco said. “It’s a great race for the fans. … We’ve been so close the last three or four weeks. We just finally got the car going better and better. But it just seems like we couldn’t get that break. Tonight we finally got it.”

Said Preece: “That was a great race. It was a lot of fun to be a part of.”
