The Connecticut short track racing weekend will see special events going on north and south.

At Stafford Motor Speedway Friday the Valenti Modified Racing Series rolls into town for their third event of the season at the half-mile oval.

The Waterford Speedbowl swings back into action Saturday with its Thunder on The Sound event, which features the $5,000 to win Budweiser SK Modified Nationals 150.

What: NASCAR Whelen All-American Series event and Valenti Modified Racing Series Series

Where: Stafford Motor Speedway

When: Friday

Schedule: 80-lap Valenti Modified Racing Series, 40-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified, 30-lap Late Model, 20-lap SK Light Modified, 20-lap Limited Late Model and 15-lap DARE Stock. Grandstands open: 4:15 p.m.; Qualifying: 6:15 p.m.; Features: Approximately 7 p.m.

More: The 14th event of the season at Stafford Motor Speedway. … The third visit of the season for the Valenti Modified Racing to Stafford. Todd Szegedy and Keith Rocco won in the two previous events at the track. Szegedy’s Kevin Stuart racing team no longer competes with the division. Rocco is a part-timer with the division and has also won this year racing with the series in the division’s season opening event at the Waterford Speedbowl in April. … Last week, Rowan Pennink won for the third time in the last five events in the SK Modified division. … Ryan Preece has won five of 12 SK Modified features this year at Stafford. Other winners this year include Pennink (three), Keith Rocco, Ted Christopher and rookies Chase Dowling and Ronnie Williams. … Preece leads the SK Modified division standings by 22 points over Christopher. Woody Pitkat is third in the standings, 48 points off the lead. … Michael Bennett won for the second time this season last week in the Late Model feature at Stafford. Other winners this year include Adam Gray (three), Jay Stuart (three), Jim Peterson (twice), JJ Hill, and Tom Fearn. … Gray holds a 22-point lead over second place Stuart at the top of Late Model division standings. Schedule: 150-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified, 30-lap Late Model. 25-lap Street Stock, 25-lap Mini Stock, 25-lap SK Light Modified and 25-lap Legends. Grandstands open: 3 p.m.; Qualifying: 5 p.m.; Features: Approximately 6:30 p.m.

More: The 20th event of the season at the shoreline oval. … The Thunder on the Sound schedule is highlighted by the $5,000 to win Budweiser SK Modified Nationals 150. … Keith Rocco, who has won 10 of 19 SK Modified events at Waterford this year, is the defending Modified Nationals 150 champion. … Whelen Modifed Tour regular Woody Pitkat, the 2011 Modified Nationals champion, will also be in the field. Whelen Modified Tour regular Matt Hirschman said expects to be at the show, but that his team is still working to prepare his car. … Other SK Modified division winners this year include Ed Puleo (twice), Kyle James (twice), Rob Janovic Jr., Tyler Chadwick, Joey Gada, Jeffrey Gallup and Craig Lutz. … Rocco has a 219-point advantage over second place Lutz in the SK Modified division standings at Waterford. Tim Jordan is third in the standings, 230 points off the lead. … Rocco won for the 10th time this season in last week’s Late Model feature. … Other Late Model division winners this year include Bruce Thomas Jr. (three), Vin Esposito (two) and Jason Palmer (two).
