WATERFORD – It didn’t matter how bad Josh Galvin’s No. 18 Street Stock looked when he pulled up to the starter’s stand following the 25-lap feature for the division Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.

A season’s worth of amazing finishes made a rough night for Josh Galvin finish in sparkling fashion Saturday.

Galvin’s crash-marred 10th place in Saturday’s feature clinched the 2014 Street Stock division championship for the Franklin driver.

“Mr. Rooter, Vin Beedle put a lot of effort into this program here,” Galvin said. “We definitely wouldn’t be here in the position to win without him. … We’ve been working at this for a long time. We spent a lot of nights up late thinking about how to get fast. To come out here and beat the best, it is the best to beat the best.”

Galvin will go to the final event of the season on Oct. 5 holding an insurmountable 118-point lead over second place Al Stone III in the division’s standings.

Galvin’s night went bad early with multiple wrecks in the early going, but Stone’s night – and long hopes for catching Galvin in the standings – ended when he was involved in a major wreck with 23 laps remaining.

“I hate seeing Al up there in the wall like that,” Galvin said. “I wasn’t sure if he was going to be able to come back out with the damage he had. I couldn’t really see what happened to him. Al deserved to be out here tonight to race for the championship. It’s hard to see that happen.”

Ed Gertsch Jr. of East Haven won the feature, his first victory at the track since 2004. Chris Meyer of Norwich was second and Chris Douton of Waterford third.

“It’s real nice,” Gertsch said. “It’s been really frustrating. We’ve been really trying hard. I did five or six years as a crew chief at Stafford [Motor Speedway] on Woody Pitkat’s car and I came back here to play around and just have some fun and I discovered it’s no fun if you’re not competitive.”
