WATERFORD – There was little drama involved in the securing the 2014 SK Light Modified division championship Sunday at the Waterford Speedbowl for Corey Barry.

But the Plainfield driver still found a way to grab the title in style.

Barry won the 24-lap SK Light Modified feature at Finale Weekend Sunday at the Waterford Speedbowl.

It was the sixth victory of the season for Barry. The race was red-flagged after 24 laps because of time constraints. The race was originally scheduled for 25 laps.

D.J. Burnham of East Hartford was second in his debut at the Speedbowl. Randy Churchill of Oakdale was third.

Barry won the division title by 48 points over Churchill. He clinched the title by taking the green flag to start the race.

“It’s unreal,” an emotional Barry said in victory lane. “There’s no better way to go out than with a win. This is awesome.”

“They all wanted it just as bad as me today. But I knew as soon as I got on the track that I was going to be the champion. So I figured hey, wreckers or checkers and we got the checkers today.”

Barry inherited the lead on lap 18 but it was hardly a runaway for the title winner.

With four laps left Paul Buzel made contact with Barry in turn four in a battle for the top spot with Buzel sliding up the track. Barry got partially sideways in the corner but kept going forward, hanging on to his lead.

“I came into today knowing, I’ve got to make one lap and I get the championship and then I’ve got to go,” Barry said. “Some of those moves out there, last week they would have definitely not been tried. Even when [Buzel] almost spun me out coming off of [turn] four, I was just hoping, I hit the brakes and I was hoping for it to stay straight and it did. I guess somebody was looking out for me today.”

Burnham rallied from an earlier spin to a second place finish in his first career start at the track.

“I think we had a car that could have won this race,” Burnham said. “We just had some stuff happen at the beginning of the race.”
