The Sunoco World Series 150 race will mark the end of a significant season for Rob Fuller Motorsports. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (NWMT) team made two impactful changes during the season — bringing on past champion Todd Szegedy as driver and switching to the new LFR Chassis.
Both changes proved successful as the team secured three Top-10 finishes, including a second place finish in their last event at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Todd Szegedy, 2003 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion, will drive the 15-40 Connection Chevrolet in the season finale event this weekend. Szegedy has 18 career wins and 10 pole positions in the NWMT including three career victories at Thompson Speedway.
“We had a pretty solid run at Thompson in August,” said Szegedy. “The car was not handling perfect, like it normally does and we found we had a bad shock at the end of the race. Considering that we got an eighth place finish with a bad shock, I’m really looking forward to getting back there.”
Team owner, Rob Fuller has been thrilled with the results of this season.
“Our performance has been the best it’s ever been,” said Fuller. “I had a strong run to start the year at Thompson and Todd took the reins on the LFR Chassis and we have been in contention every week. We have had the fastest car every week so the performance has been great. The team has connected well and I think it’s been the best year to date.”
MSIII Racing, lead by driver Doug Coby, team owner Mike Smeriglio III and crew chief Phil Moran will enter the race weekend as the NWMT points leader and have a solid shot at winning the championship on Sunday.
“I couldn’t be happier for Phil, Mike, Doug and that whole group,” said Fuller. “It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone though. Phil is one of the best in the business. We have been working together for years so we have become good friends and its great to see them in the situation they are in. Next year they will be in the LFR Chassis family and that is huge for us both. With the way the LFR cars are running, I think they will be even stronger next year and it will be fun to watch.”
Testicular cancer survivor Rob Russo was chosen to be an honorary crew member with the No. 15 team at Thompson. His story was chosen when RFM and 15-40 Connection asked race fans to submit journeys to cancer diagnosis to build the non-profits’ educational platform. 15-40 Connection is a non-profit organization that raises awareness of cancer symptoms and the obstacles teens and young adults face to diagnose cancer at earlier stages.
