THOMPSON – Woody Pitkat opened the 2014 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season with a bang April 5-6 at Thompson Speedway.

Pitkat won the pole for the Icebreaker 150 at Thompson on April 5 and then dominated the event on April 6 before finishing second in the race to Justin Bonsignore.

This weekend Pitkat is looking to make the closer one better than the opener and he opened the weekend at Thompson in style.

Pitkat, of Stafford, led the way in Whelen Modified Tour practice Saturday for Sunday’s Sunoco World Series 150 at Thompson.

Pitkat toured the .625-mile Thompson Speedway oval with a fast lap of 18.705 seconds (120.289 mph). Pitkat, who never won in the division before this season, has two victories this year.

Ryan Preece of Berlin, winner of the most previous series event, at Stafford Motor Speedway on Sept. 28, was second fastest in practice at 18.766 seconds (119.898 mph). Donny Lia of Jericho, N.Y. was third fastest in practice at 18.855 seconds (119.332 mph).

Doug Coby of Milford, who goes into the event looking to clinch his second series title, was 11th fastest during the practice. Ted Christopher, who is 28 points behind Coby in second place in the standings, was eighth fastest during practice.
