Breaking: New London-Waterford Speedbowl To Run Final Major Event Of Local Short Tracks In 2015

Speedbowl New BannerThe Sunoco World Series at Thompson Speedway has traditionally been the swan song finale for the Connecticut short track racing scene.

Though, that won’t be the case this year.

New London-Waterford Speedowl general manager Shawn Monahan confirmed to RaceDayCT Saturday that the shoreline oval will host a major finale event on Saturday Oct. 24, a week after Thompson Speedway hosts its traditional World Series weekend.

It will be a one-day event that will showcase high purse open Tour Type Modified and SK Modified events.

“There’s going to be an awesome SK race,” Monaha said. “It’s going to pay out enough money to make drivers come from all the other tracks.”

Monahan said Dick Williams and Jim Schaefer and their “The Racing Guys” group, who have promoted events for the Tri-Track Open Modified Racing Series, will promote the Tour Type Modified event.

“That should be an awesome event,” Monahan said. “Hopefully any competitor that raced on a Tour will want to be there.”

Monahan also confirmed that the Granite State Pro Stock Series will makes it Speedbowl debut that weekend. The division will close out its season with the event at the Speedbowl.

Monahan said he expects to be able to announce the full 2015 schedule by Saturday evening.

Hopefully the weather doesn’t screw around with Thompson’s event the week before or Lee’s Oktoberfest.

It’s not like New England’s weather is hit or miss at that time of the year.

I said it before and I’ll say it again – New England needs another modified series like it needs another bad promoter running a race track.
