WATERFORD – Corey Barry ended the 2014 season as the top dog in the SK Light Modified division at the Waterford Speedbowl.
Saturday the Plainfield driver started the 2015 season right where he left off.
Barry began his reign as the 2014 SK Light Modified championship at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl by winning the division’s 25-lap feature Saturday. Barry also won the season ending event last year.
“Ending last year with a win and then picking up the first win this year, you can’t ask for anything better,” Barry said.
Paul Buzel of Trumbull was second and Josh Galvin of Franklin, making his division debut, was third.
Barry held off the charges of a feisty Buzel over the closing laps.
“He was doing his job protecting the lead as the leader,” Buzel said. “I gave him everything I had.”
Said Barry: “Paul was definitely fast. My car went away towards the end. It was great on the restarts, it always has been. I think we just lost the setup a little bit at the end. We could have been faster. But it’s the first week, I’ll take it.”
At this point, Barry is not in defense mode when it comes to his championship. He said he will likely not run full-time with the division this season.
“As of right now we’re not sure,” Barry said. “We’re going to look more towards 2016, trying to lock in some sponsors to maybe do something a little bigger for next year. Right now it’s strictly part-time, unless somebody wants to fork over some money. But, I’ll tell you what, after tonight, it kind of really makes me want to come back next week.”
