STAFFORD – On Saturday at the New London-Waterford, Doug Coby and Ryan Preece duked it out for the lead for much of the second half of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Mr. Rooter 161.

And that battle will carry over to Stafford Motor Speedway at least for the start of the TSI Harley-Davidson 125 tonight.

Doug Coby, the TSI Harley-Davidson 125 defending champion and reigning series champion, won the pole in qualifying for the TSI Harley-Davidson 125 Friday.

Coby, of Milford, toured the half-mile oval with a fast lap of 18.271 seconds (98.517 mph).

Preece, of Berlin, will start second after a qualifying lap of 18.317 seconds (98.269 mph). Preece, who won the event at the Speedbowl, was fastest during practice Friday afternoon at Stafford.

Coby has an average finish of 3.7 over the last 13 Whelen Modified Tour events at Stafford Motor Speedway. He has five victories during that span.

Bobby Santos III of Franklin, Mass. will start third after a qualifying lap of 18.348 seconds (98.103 mph).

Woody Pitkat of Stafford, the winner of the Whelen Modified Tour NAPA Spring Sizzler 200 at Stafford on April 26, will start fourth (18.372 seconds, 97.975 mph).
