SCARBOROUGH, Maine — If his car keeps up with this kind of speed, Scott Alexander can probably just drive it straight home Sunday night.
Alexander, of Newburgh, Maine, picked up his second PASS Modified victory of the season on Saturday, survived three restarts inside the final eight laps to win the 40-lap feature event as part of the Southern Maine Chrysler Dodge Jeep PASS 400 weekend.
“Truth be told, I’m just hoping I can get a ride home (Sunday) night,” Alexander joked in victory lane.
Alexander, after winning the first of two Modified heat races, lined up within striking distance of the leaders on a Lap 1 restart and set to driving away from the field. But two single-car spins and a hard hit that claimed the cars of Matt Sanborn and Evan Armington on the backstretch on lap 36 made for some nervous times for Alexander.
“I definitely didn’t want those (restarts),” Alexander said. “It was a fun race. My dad’s worked really hard on the car all weekend. I really couldn’t do it without him.”
Andy Shaw of Center Conway, N.H., settled for second after lining up directly outside Alexander on all of the late-race restarts. Point leader Doug McClure, who has a series-high three wins in 2015, finished third.
The victory was Alexander’s second of the season and helped him close the gap on McClure with another 40-lap feature on tap for Sunday at Beech Ridge. McClure led Shaw by five points and Alexander by seven atop the standings entering the doubleheader weekend.
Following Saturday’s feature win by Alexander, he leapfrogged Shaw into second — just three points shy of McClure. Shaw is five points off the championship lead.
“(McClure) has been the best car all year,” Alexander said. “When you beat him, you’ve had a good day.”
Alexander could be poised to have another good day on Sunday, but he’ll have to do so without his father. And his ride home.
“He has to leave (Saturday), so we’ll see what happens,” Alexander said.
