THOMPSON – The reigning NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion has been on a mission of closing out the season with perfection.
Doug Coby has rallied from 25 points behind over the last two events and goes into Sunday’s season ending Whelen Modified Tour Sunoco World Series 150 tied for the series points lead with Ryan Preece.
Saturday Coby began the weekend out front early.
Coby, of Milford, led the way in practice Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s event.
Coby has won all three Whelen Modified Tour events run at Thompson this season.
With six victories this season, Coby holds the tiebreaker over Preece (four victories) and Woody Pitkat (one victory), who sits third place in the standings, four points behind the leaders.
Coby, who also won a series championship in 2012, toured the .625-mile Thompson Speedway oval with a fast lap of 18.705 seconds (120.289 mph).
Pitkat, of Stafford, was second fastest during the practice session at 18.715 seconds (120.224 mph). Pitkat has two seconds and a fifth in three races at Thompson this year.
Preece, of Berlin, was sixth fastest during practice at 18.775 seconds (119.840 mph). Preece has finishes of fifth, sixth and seventh at Thompson this year.
Keith Rocco of Wallingford was third fastest during practice at 18.741 seconds (120.058 mph). Timmy Solomito of Islip, N.Y. and Chase Dowling of Roxbury rounded out the top five respectively in practice.
