Rob Sturgis, Walter Popiak Set to Tackle Technical Thompson Road Course

(Press Release from OTB Promotions)

Icebreaker Road Race Style LogoScheduled for April 29 and 30 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park (TSMP), the Icebreaker, Road Race Style, is New England’s first road course race of the season. Promoted by OTB Promotions, Inc., the non-points, just-for-fun event will feature a variety of cars. Entries range from small bore to big bore, and an open wheel group, too.

Rob Sturgis (Ashland, MA) is ready for competition in his No. 16 Mazda Miata. He was one of the first entries for the 2016 event, noting the “tremendous value for the amount of time on track.” Entrants receive two hours of track time over the course of the two days.

Sturgis looks at the abundance of track time as a benefit that will help him to achieve his goals in 2016, namely a New England Road Racing Championship (NERRC) in the STL class. TSMP – the site of Icebreaker, Road Race Style – also happens to play host to the final leg of the NERRC. The driver of the the G&M Services/Lowrider Depot/Keysign entry will use the extra track time to master the “number of challenging corners that tests the car’s handling and driver.” While being competitive is important, Sturgis says his “hope [is] to have a safe and fun racing season.”

Thompson, CT-native Walter Popiak looks at the Icebreaker, Road Race Style, as a “great opportunity to get early track time at a reasonable price.” Track time is something that is important to Popiak. TSMP’s technical 1.7-mile road course takes repetition because of its low-speed, tight-radius turns. Furthermore, Thompson hosts the final race of the New England Region Sports Car Club of America Championship. Should the Championship come down to the final laps, experience at Thompson could prove to be critical.

Qualifying, presented by DWW Motorsports, will take place on Friday, April 29. The day will also include feature racing for the Midstate Site Development Legends Series. Race Day, presented by Fast Track Concessions, is Saturday, April 30. In addition to the Small Bore, Big Bore, and Open Wheel classes, the North East Mini Stock Tour is also on the card that day.
