THOMPSON – Glenn Korner Jr. called leading laps in an SK Light Modified a “new experience” for him Saturday at Thompson Speedway.
But it was hardly just a taste of the front for the Canton driver.
Korner made his first taste of the front of the SK Light Modified field Saturday a feast for himself.
Korner drove away from the field late to win the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature Saturday at Thompson Speedway.
“I’m so happy I really don’t know how to process it yet,” Korner said.
It was the first career SK Light Modified victory for Korner, who is in his first year competing in the division.
“My spotter Joey Ferrigno was really calming me down, telling me not to get too excited and finish my race,” Korner said of the closing laps. “But he was also getting me amped up, telling me to keep my head in it and don’t slip up and run my lines. This was a new experience for me, getting out front and leading some laps.
“It sucks that my father [Glenn Sr.] and my brother [Noah] weren’t here to see it. They’ve been my biggest supporters.”
Noah Korner was racing at Star Speedway in Epping, N.H. Saturday, where he won his event.
“It’s been a good night for the Korner brothers,” Glenn Korner Jr. said.
Chris Viens of Putnam was second and Glenn Griswold of Vernon third.
Korner inherited the lead after Viens was penalized for spinning Damon Tinio out of the lead on lap five.
“I knew with them being in the back I just had to manage my tires and be ready for them to come through the field, which fortunately for them they didn’t have time to,” Korner said.
A good weekend for first time winners!
Great job by a great family way to go Glenn!!!!
