STAFFORD – SK Light Modified driver Wesley Prucker watched Brett Gonyaw and Cory DiMatteo battling for the lead in front of him and he prepared.

Laying in wait proved perfect for the Stafford driver.

Prucker inherited the lead when Gonyaw and DiMatteo wrecked in the battle for the top spot and he made the most of it, winning the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature Friday at Stafford.

It was the first career victory for Prucker, who has been competing in the division for five years.

“There’s so much bundled up it’s amazing,” Prucker said when asked of his emotions after the win. “We work so hard for this. We put everything we have into this car and finally it’s there.”

Marcello Rufrano of North Haven was second and Geoff Nooney of Springfield, Mass. third.

Prucker went to the lead early but got passed for the top spot by Nooney on lap six. Prucker came back to retake the lead on lap 10. But on lap 14 restart Gonyaw got past him for the top spot, with DiMatteo following to second.

But on lap 19 contact in the battle for the lead saw Gonyay and DiMatteo spinning in turn three.

“The second I saw them bumping going down the backstretch I knew that something was going to happen and I was going to be ready for that,” Prucker said. “I took advantage of that.”

Prucker held on tight through the nerve-wracking final restart.

“I’ve been killer with the restarts all day,” Prucker said. “I knew I had the car to beat today. This is awesome. … It got a little rough at times, but that was a hell of race.”
