THOMPSON – On Sept. 30 at Stafford Motor Speedway Justin Bonsignore used a 12th place finish in the NAPA Fall Final 150 to clinch his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship.

But there’s still some unfinished business left for the Holtsville, N.Y. driver.

Bonsignore is on a mission this weekend to complete a season sweep of all four series events at Thompson Speedway.

Of Bonsignore’s seven series victories this year, three have come at Thompson Speedway.

Saturday Bonsignore got that mission started the right way in leading the way in NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practice in preparation for Sunday’s season ending Sunoco World Series 150 at Thompson.

Bonsignore toured the .625-mile oval with a fast lap of 18.605 seconds.

Morning showers at Thompson gave way to afternoon sunshine, but forced NASCAR to cut Whelen Modified Tour practice from two sessions to one.

Qualifying for the Sunoco World Series 150 will take place this evening.

Ron Silk of Norwalk was second fastested during the 50-minute practice session with a lap of 18.722 seconds.

Jon McKennedy of Chelmsford, Mass. was third fastest at 18.738 seconds.

Burt Myers of Walnut Cove, N.C. (18.741 seconds) and Doug Coby of Milford (18.780 seconds) rounded out the top-five in practice respectively.

  1. Justin Bonsignor is just a terrific champion. There’s nothing about his accomplishment this year that isn’t admirable. The fact that Dowling had enough points to win the championship in most years is a testiment to the 51’s excellence.
But you can see from the lack of interest here anyway that JB’s excellence and the lack of a story is boring. Excepting the Preece/Bonsignor dust up at the Musket that extended to qualifying. That resulted in Justin losing a bit of his usual control and using a potty mouth to describe his happiness in Preece moving on to another series.
Preece and Bonsignor are racing for nothing but the win. Could there be fireworks?
