STAFFORD – Two weeks on April 27, when the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour tried to get NAPA Spring Sizzler 200 weekend going at Stafford Motor Speedway, it was reigning series champion Justin Bonsignore sweeping both practices that day before rains ended the weekend and postponed the event.

After two more postponements, the Whelen Modified Tour returned to Stafford Saturday for one more try under blue skies and sunshine.

And once again it was the champion leading the way.

Bonsigore, of Holtsville, N.Y., led the way in practice Saturday in preparation for the NAPA Spring Sizzler 200.

Bonsigore toured the historic half-mile oval with a fast lap of 17.875 seconds (100.699 mph).

Rob Summers of Manchester chased Bonsignore during the only practice session of the day for the series with a fast lap of 18.037 seconds (99.795 mph).

Five-time series champion and current points leader Doug Coby of Milford was third during the practice at 18.037 seconds (99.789 mph).

Craig Lutz of Miller Place, N.Y. (18.047 seconds, 99.745 mph) and Chris Pasteryak of Lisbon (18.051 seconds, 99.717 mph) rounded out the top-five respectively.

Group qualifying will take place later this afternoon.
