Poll: Would You Buy Pay-Per-View Broadcasts Of Racing From Stafford Speedway?

As short tracks around the country deal with extended shutdowns due to state regulations in place because of the COVID-19 global pandemic, some facilities are turning to pay-per-view streaming of racing events.

Some tracks and independent touring divisions see the broadcasts as a short term answer to get back to racing and give fans a way to be a part of that return to competition.

But many short track operators don’t see weekly pay-per-view broadcasting as being economically feasible as a continued regular operation. In Connecticut management at Stafford Speedway is hoping to return to regular competition with fans at the track this year. But what if they could offer weekly racing but not allow fans to attend?

So here’s the simple question – yes or no – would you pay $20 each Friday to have access to a pay-per-view racing card from Stafford Speedway featuring the track’s weekly divisions?

Vote below and feel free to use the comments if you’d like to further expand on why you would or wouldn’t be interested in pay-per-view broadcasts.

Comments

  1. It would depend on the quality of who was doing the camera work also does that include all racing or just the SK races or any other special events that night I would hope for $20 there is more than just one or two cameras and no buffering

  2. No. I’ve been watching TV for three months. I want to go to the races.

  3. I would try it. Based on the video shown around the track on the tv’s in the concession area I have no doubt the quality will be fine. I have subs to FLO racing, Speed51, and Lucas OIl. I have in the past been a subscriber to dirtvision and speedshift as well. So I have invested heavily in the PPV model for my racing needs. I stopped going to Stafford weekly in favor of watching racing online primarily because I wasn’t entertained sitting thru several divisions I am not interested in and how long the Stafford show was taking at the few shows I attended. I think you said they were not interested in PPV model, so whats the point of this are we trying to get them to change their mind. Probably going to be the only way they can open in the near future. Claremont and White Mountain are going with PPV only races this weekend. I am trying to decide if I should order one of them or not.

  4. I already paid for a season pit pass. Can’t see paying for video also.

  5. Sharpie Fan says

I’ve been watching TV for three months. I want to race!

  6. Fred Wilcox says

I’m with JD on this one. I want more than just seeing racing. I want to overload my senses while sitting in the stands. I want it all.

  7. Make it $10 a week.

  8. Fast Eddie says

With no other options to see “in person” racing I might try it. I would hope in all fairness that any season’s pass holders could access it for free. I’m much more in line with Fred and JD though. I’ve been surviving with videos, TV, and YouTube. At this point I SHOULD be looking forward to attending my 6th or 7th race of the year. I’m getting increasingly aggravated and impatient watching “nice racing weather” weekends go by! I need some “live” racing!

  9. I would pay it, Stafford is now a 6 1/2 hour drive for me. I miss that place so much

  10. $20 is too expensive; $10 or less with the taxes and I’ll do it.

  11. wmass01013 says

Honestly and I know lots of people cant understand this BUTTTTTTTT the honest excitement you feel walking in the track. the smell of gasoline, tires, brakes and ONE OF THE Most awesome sounds in the world is of 30 OR MORE Modfieds screaming down the front or backstretch is amazing, I can watch a few races online BUT I NEEEEEEEEED to be at the track!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Speaking of season passes already purchased, any idea what Stafford’s plan is? Or a wait and see approach?

  13. If the question is a generic $20 commitment on a weekly basis I’d be surprised if you could generate substantial support. RaceDayCt nation is geographically diverse so why would people in New Hampshire or PA commit to this when they may soon be able to go to races at Jennerstown, Star and likely many other places. Even if they couldn’t why would they care about Staffords weekly divisions? Regional interest is not for Stafford’s weekly divisions it’s for NWMT and tour modifieds.
If the question is would you pay $25 in three weeks to see and Open Modified 80 show and there were no other attended race alternatives I’d think the support would be pretty strong. That’s a bigger nut however with bigger risk and major up front sponsorship would be needed in any event.
The real poll is the GSPSS race on Friday and all the other experience they are having with fanless streamed races.. What numbers are they getting? If you’re Stafford and you were going to use Speed51 they have people that discuss proposed events with tracks to see if it’s viable.
In any event you’re not starting from zero because you have the back gate and that’s as many have suggested in the current environment a big part of the entire shows revenue.
Thinking out loud I wonder if Stafford or any other track for that matter could produce and distribute their own product. Not now obviously but in the future. Right now the races are videoed and appear on Youtube in some cases the next day. If you can manage the administration of the subscriptions is the live internet one camera feed fairly straightforward or is it a whole new level of more complicated technology. Would fans accept the one camera or will they only pay for a heavily produced multi camera show?

  14. john pisciotta says

Absolutely! Most people paid way more than that for toilet paper! 20 Buck to support the track is a no brainer! It’s a mile and a half from me and after all the memories I’ve gotten from there, I’d be happy to help them continue any way I can!

  15. As I comment I am watching a live facebook feed of practice at Orange county fair speedway. It is multi camera. I have counted at least 4 different camera angles. I know a few tracks in NY are starting racing this week with streaming only. Some are partnering with Dirt track digest others are doing it themselves. If you want to open a race track in NE this is only way you can do it right now and in the near future. Stafford used to produce their own show for NESN and they produce a multi camera show for broadcast at the track in the press boxes and concourses. I believe they still have the camera stands at the track. They may have to update their cameras if they havent as I don’t think the NESN broadcast was in hd. I am sure they can pull it off and put out a good quality stream themselves. There is definitely good racing streams and bad racing streams out there. One thing I would suggest is tying race monitor live scoring into the stream, that is in my opinion one of the factors that distinguishes a good stream from a bad stream. Multi camera and lag are the other important ones. Personally I hope they go for it. I will definitely give it a try and I don’t go to their races all that often anymore. So from me, they would pick up some money they most likely wouldn’t have had even if they were allowed to open the grandstands.

  16. Suitcase Jake says

I would be Happy to pay $20.00 to watch to the weekly races from Stafford .. My Race Chaser
Friend and I , travel about 165 miles round trip on Friday nights to see the Races at Stafford .
between gas, food, and tickets we spend around 45 dollars each minimum.. throw in some
fried dough and couple cold ones its like 60 dollars … So on the Fridays where PPV is available
we would save $40.00 apiece .. Sure thing i would pay $20.00 to see the races!!!!
    Suitcase Jake……

  17. I would, but I would hope my season pass would allow me to watch without further payment.

  18. Shawn, any way we can see the current tally of this poll?

I saw the current vote results after I voted, but can’t see the current tally.

  19. I would pay to watch PPV from Stafford. I would prefer to be at the track but I learned to enjoy PPV for dirt track racing over the last few years. I am already am a subscriber to Fast Pass on Dirtvision to watch World of Outlaw races and Super Dirt Series races. I also have bought races dirt modified races on dirt track digest. My suggestion to Stafford is set up the PPV to be played on a Roku or other streaming device. My only complaint with Dirtvision is there is no Roku app yet.

  20. Darealgoodfella,
Not sure why you’re not seeing the update. You should be able to continually refresh updated total after voting. Current totals: 447 votes – 230 YES (51 percent); 217 NO (49 percent).

  21. For those complaining about $20 being too much for a pay-per-view, there’s nothing stopping you from getting a few family members or friends together to watch and splitting the cost. In fact, most tracks doing PPV have priced the broadcasts knowing this will happen. $20 split four ways is only $5 per person. That’s a lot less than buying a ticket at the track, and it’s also more fun than watching alone in your bedroom.

  22. Shawn, I tried with Safari and FIreFox. I voted and it replied with the current results. Further visits to see the updated results only show the total number of votes, not the distribution of those votes. If I click on the Yes or No again, I get a message saying the IP has already voted, and still no tally status. No help if I hover on the Yes or No vote bars.

  23. darealgoodfella,
I’ve done a little searching into this and can’t figure this out. I think it has to do with certain devices. I’ve changed the polling options so that now results are displayed before voting. That should fix the issue.

  24. Social distancing is still in play folks to contain the spread of the coronavirus 🦠. Going to somebody’s house to socialize for a few hours is not recommended. Indoor gatherings are the WORST places to be.

That said, $20 is a bargain. You have all your own snacks and beverages at far lower cost. No driving. Sound is pretty good if you pipe it through a stereo. Still need smell-a-vision, and the dust blowing in your eyes.

Looks like Doug with his alter egos and personalities are complaining, so don’t be concerned. He complains about everything.

EPISODE 2: WHAT ARE THE COSTS TO STREAM A RACE DAREAL?

    darealgoodfella says
    March 8, 2020 at 1:34 pm
There is a huge crew, hosts, equipment, travel expenses, transportation expenses, lodging, meals, fees, etc. that adds up to hundreds of thousands or more dollars to televise the NWMT for a season. When I travel for business, the total can run into a couple grand for a week, and that’s just simple airfare, hotel, meals, rental car. For a crew to cover a race, there will be the cameras, transportation costs, control center, live hosts, and many background support personnel.

  27. Stafford put on their own televised show years ago. Should be easy to duplicate. Live would be a little different, putting in commercials during down time etc. as long as you can watch it anytime I think PPV would work. If the state allows 500 people in the pits for this they should be able to allow 500 people in the stands.

  28. Shawn, whatever you did works, I can see the results now. Thanks. 🙏 😊

  29. I wouldn’t pay per view for a race at Stafford. Television coverage focuses too much on only the leader of the race, and not the whole field. Some of the best racing takes place further back. The PPV experience takes away from the race. That being said, if it came down to PPV or no racing at all, I’d support PPV.

  30. “That said, $20 is a bargain. You have all your own snacks and beverages at far lower cost. No driving. Sound is pretty good if you pipe it through a stereo. Still need smell-a-vision, and the dust blowing in your eyes.”

I’d park the camper in the yard to sleep in it after the race for extra realism.

The canned ethanol-free gas sold at home centers smells a lot like race gas when burnt, I run the mower on it for the smell. ;^)

  31. Haven’t heard what’s happening with my 2020 grandstand season pass yet. Until then I might consider paying $10 for ppv.

  32. A little off topic but WMT-Nashville-2021? 1.33 miles around.

Maybe a poll question for tomorrow

  33. Only for the WMT.

  34. I am kind of surprised the polling is registering so close to even. I think the only way they open up soon is a PPV model without fans in the stands initially. They are talking fan free football in the fall in some states. I would much rather watch Keith Rocco, Mike Christopher and Eric Berndt racing on TV than no racing at all. NY Speedways Orange County, Utica Rome and Outlaw speedway have fan free PPV scheduled this week. Our friends up in NH, RIverside, Claremont and White Mountain all have PPV scheduled this weekend with no fans in attendance. I think at this point in NE, the only way you can get state approval to hold competitive racing is to limit race events to competitor and crew only. Maybe once we have a few weeks in without any major issues we can start letting limited amounts of fans under certain guidelines.

  35. Is this $20 good for the whole season or each race. Also does this cover all the Special shows. I think that this is a hard pull to swallow as each bigger race cost more money to get into the pits take a open show it cost 50 dollars each person not 20 dollars. The competitors are paying there own purse….

  36. I would if they got Sid and crew as part of the video production, in car, bumper cam stuff – those folks have done some great work! Maybe Stafford has done something similar already, I just haven’t seen it.

I watched a nurse being interviewed during one of the protests. Reporter asked her if she felt safe in a big crowd during a pandemic. She said she absolutely felt safe because most people were wearing masks. Folks, here’s a nurse walking in a crowd of sweaty thousands of people packed together like sardines. Folks social distancing is useless.

  39. I don’t know what the end game is for this poll is. Whether it’s a fun bit of entertainment getting the temperature on a topic that seems relevant now or a RaceDayCt/Stafford team effort with more specific goals and I don’t want to know. What’s clear is the pandemic has caused streaming races to take a big leap forward.
Except for the NWMT race at Jennerstown modifieds seem to be the ugly step child of Northeast racing from a streaming perspective. If you favor the various full bodied Late Model variations you’re all set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday if you have around $70 and the weather is favorable up North. $25 for the GSPSS at Clairemont Friday via Speed51, $15 for the regular White Mountain/Thunder Road divisions Saturday via the Northeast Sports Network and PASS on Sunday for $25 also via NSN at White Mountain.
So how are they doing it? In the case of Clairemont it looks like they have big sponsors covering the lions share of the nut up front to get Speed51 in there. White Mountain is fortunate having NSN nearby in Vermont. They stream mostly local sports and can even do a graduation for Pete’s sake. Now with High School and College sports dormant motorsports goes on the front burner for NSN.
NSN is doing two consecutive days of racing at White Mountain so how smart is that? I don’t know anything about the WMMP/Thunder Road Late Models, Flying Tigers, Mini’s or Dwarf cars but for $15 and with the help of a few brewskies Saturday starting at 5PM I’m going to find out.
Down in southern New England the numbers still don’t support allowing teams to congregate in the pits but that’s changing as well. Poor Ned Lamont who has had the snot beat out of him over the last couple months is a bit more optimistic announcing plans to allow school graduation in July and considering allowing indoor eating at eateries.
Motors will be firing up up north this weekend so good for them and the Late Model fans. It’s not our time yet but it may be sooner then anyone could have imagined a month ago.

Anarchy, you just proved you are an idiot.

That goes against what every other nurse, doctor, or expert has said. It goes against what the data has shown and proven. Just look at the data, a picture that you should be able to understand, the shows the rise is frustrated shortly after social distancing is put in place. Just look at the data and it shows that the infections capped off once social distancing took effect. And that the rest of the WORLD is doing it, except Sweden, proves social distancing works. That Sweden’s death rate is 450/M, Finland is at 58/M, and Norway is at 44/M. Sweden is located between Norway and Finland. Sweden just launched an investigation as to why they were so stupid and did not do like Norway and Finland did.

Social distancing is the most important tool we have against the spread of this deadly pathogen 🦠.

  42. Hey Anarchy, your boy Trump says it’s the anarchists that are causing all the trouble. Anarchists like you.

  43. I think we can all agree that the SK Mods at Stafford put on a great show. If they can do a good job with the broadcast, I think something like this could be a wonderful way to get weekly racing going again. At least at Stafford. Clearly there will have to be cautions taken at the track, social distancing, masks, gloves, sanitizer, etc.

Perhaps Stafford can take the risk and try PPV’ing a couple races to see how well it is received by the CUSTOMERS. If and only if they can get approval from the state to operate.

Yeah you got me there dafella. I’m the problem. Every city in America is throwing social distancing into the wind. Why should anyone in a small town not do the same? Funny how a couple short weeks ago the media was losing their minds screaming about the get back to work protesters spreading around the corona. But now, who cares about the corona. It’s for a good cause.

  49. Anarchy, you are such an idiot, I have to explain everything to you.

You clearly have no ability to understand transmission and how that is dependent on density centers. Look at southern New Hampshire, an extension of the Boston urban density. Even cities in North Dakota, Iowa and other overall low density states are getting pounded with this infection.

Every city in America is throwing social distancing to the wind? I don’t see that at all. There are plenty of protests against the killing of George Floyd by a LEO. But I’m not seeing every city in America disregarding social distancing.

A few weeks ago, it was the Karens, Brads and Chads protesting because they had to get to the hair and nail salons. Such incredible pain and suffering has been foisted on the entitled white world. What tyranny!!!!!! (major sarcasm) And all those folks at the Lakes of the Ozarks, the couple rogue race tracks, etc. that opened up, totally with no regard to social distancing and other safe guards. And that is out away from urban centers. All for virtueless pleasure and entertainment.

Since then, another unarmed black man was brutally killed by a LEO and it seems to have been a tipping point, along with the recent history of the many other people killed by LEOs. In an interesting twist to this situation is that there are many unemployed people right now with the time to participate in these protests against police brutality, and the brutality of the Trump Regime.

Protesting systemic racism, a killing of another unarmed black man by law enforcement, is indeed a good cause. Far more virtuous than partying at a lake, getting a haircut 💇‍♀️ , or your nails done. 💅 Don’t make like you and your ilk are not defying the needs of the pandemic, but you and your entitled self have a choice. These people that are being abused and killed by law enforcement don’t have a choice, they have no law enforcement or justice system to turn to for help. They have no choice but to take matters into their own hands. I wish it wasn’t so, but this is how change happens when suppression and oppression are coming from the very government that is supposed to be protecting all Americans. Here are some other examples: the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. But you have no idea what that means.

The thug regime thought they could get away with this under the cover of the pandemic, but it’s not working out that way.

Anarchy, you’re an idiot. Try another screen name. It never helped for Doug.

Definitely I’ll pay and to those who will not well maybe your just not a real race fan. We lost Danbury,Plainville,Riverside,West Haven. I can go on and on can we risk losing a Stafford or Riverhead. Support the tracks you claim to love so they’ll be there for your kids and Thier kids or roll the dice and maybe they’ll be forced to close. Rember racing is not yearly it’s a few months these tracks depend on us the RACE FAN TO STAY AFLOAT ALL YEAR
