STAFFORD – For the duration of the 2019 season at Stafford Speedway then SK Light Modified division rookie Jon Puleo seemed on the brink of winning.

But as close as he came, the teenager from Branford never got the chance to visit victory lane at the track.

On June 26 at the 2020 season opener for Stafford Speedway, Puleo wasted no time in making sure he finally checked off that visit to victory lane on his to-do list by winning in the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature.

Saturday at Stafford Puleo made sure win No. 2 wasn’t as long awaited as the first one.

Puleo scored victory in the 30-lap SK Light Modified feature Saturday at Stafford.

“My dad and my guys, they gave me a great car tonight,” Puleo said. “It was cool to come out here on Saturday. Not used to racing Stafford on Saturday’s but it was pretty cool our first Saturday race we won. We had a really fast car last night, we just couldn’t get through traffic. To come back today and get redemption it feels great.”

Derek Debbis of Oakdale was second and Norm Sears of Andover third.

Puleo went by George Bessette Jr. for second place on lap four and then a lap later he got under Sears into turn three to take the lead for good.

Debbis went to second past Sears on lap 14 and was able to close enough on Puleo to give him a tap in turn three on lap 23, but it was the closest Debbis would come to overtaking Puleo.

Reigning division champion Zach Robinson held off the charges of Meg Fuller over the closing laps to win the 20-lap Street Stock feature and complete a weekend sweep of the division’s events at Stafford.

Robinson, of Putnam, also won Friday’s Midstate Site Development Firecracker 30.

Fuller, of Auburn, Mass., was second and Al Stone III of Durham third.
