STAFFORD – On July 17 Chase Dowling left Stafford Motor Speedway battered physically and with a destroyed SK Modified following a vicious wreck.

Saturday Dowling returned to SK Modified action at Stafford in triumphant fashion.

Dowling passed Marcello Rufrano for the lead on lap 84 and never trailed again on the way to victory in the 100-lap NAPA SK 5K Saturday at Stafford Speedway.

Dowling’s Dan Avery owned SK Modified team took the last two events off after the hard wreck.

“I can’t thank [crew chief] Mike O’Sullivan enough,” Dowling said. “That guy has got the biggest heart. He puts a lot of work ethic into this team. We’ve had some bad luck this season, but this obviously turns it around. I can’t thank Dan Avery enough. The whole team Horsepower Hill Farm … JG Poulin, those guys. It’s awesome to win it for these guys.”

Todd Owen of Somers was second and Mike Christopher Jr. of Wolcott third.

Dowling, who came from the 13th starting spot, earned a $5,000 winner’s purse for the victory in the seventh running of the event. It was Dowling’s second SK 5K victory. He also won the event in 2017.

“We’re going to soak it up and enjoy it,” Dowling said. “These guys don’t give up. We had a rough start of the season and we come back with a destroyed race car from a couple weeks ago and come back and dominate it.”

Comments

  1. Unfortunately it was a boring race to watch – looked like the bore tour. Skl race was good

  2. I agree with Steve’s comment. Allowing a 2 tire change would at least possibly shuffle the running order and add more excitement as this 5k was boring.

  3. I agree with Steve’s comment. Allowing a 2 tire change would at least possibly shuffle the running order and add more excitement as this 5k was boring.

  4. I agree it was kinda boring it might have been better if it wasn’t for the early pileup going into 3 , took out a few good cars, I guess they all can’t be great

  5. Why wasn’t it a good race? It was pretty typical for an SK5K race was it not?
Dowling comes from 13th in a completely redone car to win making him one of two, two time winners of the race. The Stafford heavy hitters Rocco, Williams and Owen didn’t turn in a predictable dominant race. Rufrano, not part of the top tier in the SK’s was top tier in this race until he wasn’t but gets a top 5. Korner 20th to 7th and Membrino 25th to 8th were great moves. A car in the air with it’s bottom side fully visible then crashing down in a spectacular wreck is king of different isn’t it? Nice post race comments the last couple years following the race and here it falls flat. I kind of feel the same way but don’t get it.
Was it the great race the night before that made this seem kind of humdrum. No tire change drama. Is Dowling in the dog house after leaving the 82 NWMT ride?
Never a big fan of the SK5K. The strength of the division is the 40 lap sprint. Still the lack of any positive energy is surprising.

  6. Surprised we have not heard from Doug with his expert analysis of the race.

  7. A car in the air with it’s bottom side fully visible then crashing down in a spectacular wreck is a king of a different kind.
REALLY? SERIOUSLY! No wreck is ever king. People get hurt in spectacular wrecks, sometimes careers are ended due to spectacular wrecks.
Shows me, that you have utterly no respect at all for the racers.
A spectacular wreck that’s king of another kind
Seriously dude the stupidest statement I think I’ve ever read here, besides wondering welders blurbs.
Hopefully the drivers involved in that spectacular wreck are ok, but for someone to post a statement like that, speaks for itself.

  8. Some very great drivers have lost their lives in “spectacular wrecks”.
People who take joy seeing wrecks bother me.
People who post about a spectacular wreck being king
really piss me off, shows the utter disrespect they actually hold towards the sport. If you think ANY wreck is king, honestly, you need serious help.
Wrecking is part of racing, it’s a fact. Those who take joy in seeing wrecks, well, they are just sick individuals who need serious help. Just my opinion.

  9. Ask Rob Yuhas Jr. about his “spectacular” crash at New Hampshire that pretty much ended his active career in modified racing. I’ll bet he will tell you he wished that never happened.

  10. Sad thing is Earl, there are many racers around the country just like him, and many who didn’t survive a
“Spectacular wreck”. Going beyond just the driver allot of money, time and effort goes into preparing a race car, and repairing it after a wreck.
No wreck is a good wreck, and nobody should cheer after a wreck, it’s a matter of respect.
Having been involved in racing for as long as I was, I’ve seen my fair share of wrecks, but never a good wreck.
People who cheer at wrecks, or post about them being “king” are not racers, or real race fans for that matter. They just don’t get it. Tragedy may be 1 wreck away. And although you see a driver walk away, you never know what long lasting effects even a small wreck can have, sometimes years down the road.

  11. Sorry, Ron Yuhas Jr.

  12. Could be me but I think of:
Spectacular Wrecks as when people are not hurt and can walk away from them.
When people have been hurt or died, those are Horrific Wreaks
    Just a play on words….

  13. An airborne car be routed as a spectacular wreck that was king.
First to say any wreck was king tells me you were entertained by it
Second any time a car becomes airborne is not a good situation. A car landing hard from as little as a foot off the ground can lead to spinal compression, something that the symptoms although usually imediate, can take days weeks even months to show up.
There is no such thing as a good wreck. People may see that driver hop out of the car, appearing uninjured, they don’t see the driver later on, or the next day, suffering bruised ribs, hyper extended wrists, and concussions , bruised legs and ankles. ECT…
Just really irks me. Maybe it was the wording, but no mention was made of the driver(s) involved. Very insensitive. Just my opinion.

On October 9,2012 at 3:19 pm I was hit in the left front of my work van the impact pushed the front tire into the brake pedal. I went through a guardrail and hit a utility pole at roughly 45 mph everything in the back of the van came forward as the airbag pushed me back. I have 1 vertibrae that is shattered and another imploded I have very limited use of my right arm and hand and suffer from tramatic brain injury. Best part the guy that hit me was dead when he hit me. I’m 51 and there is no surgery to fix me. So no Doug I don’t cheat at life actually I would say life cheated me. I can no longer do allot of stuff I used to enjoy including racing.

  16. What a sad sad thing you are Welding Wonders. More like wondering how to weld. Can’t even post a relative original thought, instead reposting those of others. Probably not even a racer. Probably wouldn’t know a race car if it ran you over. Please for the love of God get some help, and then get a life.

  17. Doug, if it was a typo, then kinda my bad. But no mention of the driver, and the wording suggested entertainment. I was in racing a long time and saw allot of wrecks. 1 fatal (Tony J) and a few career enders, plus allot of painful injuries in kinda sensitive when it comes to wrecks understood?

  18. I was sitting less than 20 feet from where Tony J hit. To this day I remember it vividly. When you witness something like that, if your human, it changes you.

  21. LMFAO Trip wants to add his face to Mount Rushmore. If that doesn’t make you laugh…your dead inside.

  22. SAD LITTLE MAN. Still wondering how to weld? Do you even know what a welder is? Or what it does? I see you still can’t conjure an original thought, and just repost posts from months ago. SAD SAD LITTLE MAN.
DO You even know what auto racing is? It’s when a bunch of cars gather to drive around a set course, for a set distance. The first one to complete said distance wins.
Now you can share something during show and tell.
    SAD SAD LITTLE MAN
    GET A LIFE.

  23. Oh by the way, a welder is a piece of electrical equipment used to fuse together,or weld, metals. Based on your intelligence, I wouldn’t recommend you try it, you’ll definitely hurt yourself.

  24. LMFAO Trump now denies wanting his face on Mount Rushmore. The Governor of SD is calling B.S. saying that Trump brought it up weeks before his now infamous Independence Day rally in a phone call, stating that since he’s the greatest president the country has ever had, that his likeness should be there. She even gave him a 4 foot talk replica of Mount Rushmore complete with his likeness, after which he asked when construction could start.
Donald Trump, the greatest president the county’s ever had? I want what he’s smoking.

  25. wmass01013 says

Can i ask Rob P why u keep rambling about Trump in a STAFFORD 5 k article? while during the 4 or 5 months there was NO RACING i know topics stretched here But we are Racing now, can we stick to that and leave the daily politics to those sites please?

Rob p., great job, you’re in his head 24/7. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. All he thinks about is you. 👏 Rob p., you are winning. It’s hilarious to watch.

Trump has been pandering to Kristi Noem for months, giving her rides on Air Force 1. He’s been talking about getting his head added to Mt. Rushmore for years. There was talk about adding Reagan, but it was determined that there was no room or stone left many, many years ago. Time and history has not been kind to Reagan, more and more of his failings becoming public. Just wait until the Clodfather has been out of office and his Administration gets revealed. There was even talk of adding Obama, but no room is left. I can see Trump demanding that one of the existing Mt. Rushmore Presidential carvings be reshaped into his likeness, after all, he claims to be the greatest President of all time.

Mt. Rushmore is in a beautiful region of the country. The Black Hills of South Dakota are beautiful. Custer State Park is just magnificent.

Mt. Rushmore is a statement of pure audacity. I wish it was never made. There are other ways to memorialize people, and statues are not necessary if the achievements of the people can stand the test of history. The advancement and progression of a society and quality of civilization speak more for the people that fought for and achieved those results than any statue possibly can.

Great job by Dowling, he’s a pretty good driver.

  27. Wmass, come on dude doesn’t that make you laugh? That’s all I was trying to do, get people to laugh.

  28. wmass01013, you call this racing??????

Trump is the cause of the coronavirus COVID-19 #TrumpPandemic.

There is only 25% fan capacity because of the #TrumpPandemic. Trump has failed to contain the coronavirus COVID-19 travesty. We are in this mess because of Trump. The world is laughing at the USA for yet another Trump failure.

Real racing is on a day-to-day schedule, anything can happen, anything can be cancelled or postponed on moment’s notice. And it is all because of Trump. The rest of the world is laughing at the USA and the failure of the Trump Administration to deal with the TrumpPandemic, also known as the coronavirus COVID-19.

College football is all but cancelled for the coming season. That’s going to be a real wake up call for industry. Hopefully industry will then realize that before they can operate, the #TrumpPandemic has to be exterminated. The virus 🦠 is spreading like wildfire through the college teams already.

No fans, 25% capacity, etc. and you call that racing? These races are supposed to be spectator sport events. The excitement and thrill is GOING TO THE TRACK.

  29. wmass01013 says

This is still an AUTO racing site! While you and others may find was Trump says and does as FUNNY, A DO I, others DO NOT but again while topics get stretched here at times it was A STAFFORD 5K article. beside the dispute between you and Doug about his comment, WHY BRING in Trumps daily funny remarks to it? Several times i have seen comments about DAREAL’s constant political rants being not wanted, if you want to make funnies about Trump , please FIND a politics site is all i am asking, plenty to talk about STAFFORD, THOMPSON, WATERFORD, NHMS, MAD DOG, TRI TRACK, WMT, MRS, RACING GUYS, OPENS!!!!!!

  30. Racing related news.
Gov. Baker has rolled back reopening to Phase 3 step 1. This limits OUTDOOR gatherings to 50 people, which makes racing with fans at Seekonk not likely this year.

  31. Wmass, what happened? Did you play with your sense of humor too much as a child forcing your parents to take it away?
It’s not a sense of humor that will make you go blind, it’s that other thing!
Lighten up dude. Laugh a little, don’t worry your face won’t freeze that way. These are trying times we live in. And Donald Trump is mainly to blame.
If you don’t find Trump saying he is the greatest president we’ve ever had, and deserves to be on My. Rushmore funny, then you must be dead inside.

  32. wmass01013, this is a racing site but you need to understand that racing has been severely impacted by the #TrumpPandemic 🦠 . If not for the #TrumpPandemic 🦠 , there would be racing all over, no restrictions, no closed tracks, no capacity limitations, etc. So the #TrumpPandemic 🦠 has caused all these issues that are impacting racing. How can that be ignored?

I think what Trump says is funny (for all the wrong reasons), stupid and tragic. The USA, a country that is supposedly the greatest in the world, is the worst of the advanced nations, or near the worst, in managing the #TrumpPandemic. Can’t ignore that. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have died as a result of the #TrumpPandemic, and many more will.

  33. Yes Dareal, yes to everything you’ve said here.
The greatest, wealthiest, most powerful nation in the world, crippled by the actions of one man, or inactions. The sad part is that Congress refuses to correct the situation. Many families are suffering right now, the economy is in shambles, and Congress is on vacation. Too many people refuse to take the steps needed to slow down this deadly virus, even as those around them fall victim to it.
The result, race events held at 25 % capacity, if at all. Nevermind racing, look around, chaos, this is not the way things should be. And there is only 1 person to blame Donald J. Trump. Donald J. Trump refuses to grasp the reality of the situation at hand. Donald J. Trump cares about 1 thing and 1 thing only, HIMSELF. Until this changes America will continue to suffer, as things get progressively worse. And soon Covid will regain control here, and there will be no racing.
We the people can take steps to curb the spread, but until Donald J. Trump wakes up, or is voted out, we’re screwed.

  34. Being ignorant to what’s happening in the world will not make it go away, it will only make the situation worse

  35. Wmass they cannot and will not answer your question in a logical fashion. Their only answer will be “well Trump is this or that”, but will never actually answer the question because it will be a sad reality upon themselves of which they don’t really want to admit.

  36. Fast Eddie says

I find the tragedies of this virus as being beyond comprehension. However, I also don’t want to be housebound forever either. In some way shape or form one must work for what they really want to do and for what makes them happy. In the case of being a race fan, it’s still doable, although far different from the norm. We just have to work a little harder to make it happen. Buying tickets early instead of waiting on weather reports, and most importantly protecting yourself at the track. I’ve been to ten races so far this year, 6 with 50% capacity rules and 4 with 25% capacity rules. I consider that pretty good considering the first one was near the end of June. I’m protecting myself as I see fit and feel comfortable with, which might be a little more than most, but I’m still fine and still going to the races!

  37. What’s the question that isn’t being answered?

  38. wmass01013 says

The question is why we have to bring Trumps comments about ANYTHING to a racing website?
We cant change lives lost! Races cancelled! 25% or 50 % limits on attendance! Gov. Restrictions!, wearing a mask, social distancing, it affects everyone EVERYDAY, u can stay Home and sulk, BLAME TRUMP 24 HRS A DAY, Like FAST EDDIE i went to the 2 Stafford opens, i ENJOYED BOTH, I BOUGHT a ticket for Monadnock WMT on Aug 29. i will go to any other opens at Stafford, and maybe ANOTHER race or 2 before the end of the year.

  39. wmass01013, it is preposterous for citizens and consumers to take on the consequences of the #TrumpPandemic and expect to be silent about it. If it bothers you to see Trump being exposed as the total stupididiotmoron that he is, find someone else to cheer for. Trump is negatively impacting the country and Americans and we do not have to remain silent about it because others like the boob and don’t want him exposed as a big boob.

Our sport of racing has been seriously impacted by Trump and his profound incompetence. It only makes sense to discuss it.

  40. NASCAR Cup, Xfinity, trucks all running without fans with few exceptions. NWMT, no explanation needed. Indycar to run Indy 500 without fans for first time in 104 years, and in September no less. Most other Indycar races cancelled. IMSA has seen an extremely shortened season, no fans and teams from outside the country are not allowed to compete. NHRA season in jeopardy, and no fans. John Force racing even decided to sit it out. Formula 1 no fans shortened season. No US race
This is what racing has become. It didn’t have to be this way. It will only get worse, because nothing is being done by the federal government to stop it. Is it fair ?
This is just a few examples dealing with racing, let alone all the other sports that have been cancelled. No pee wee football, that will affect those kids for the rest of their life. No live venue entertainment.
Look around, take a good hard look. Is this the way life is supposed to be? Time is running out.
Funny thing is President Trump is more concerned about his re-election, then he is about your well being, to the point that he’s using the military to break down peaceful protest against him. Hear this loud and clear. Donald J Trump could care less wether you live or die, he only cares about himself. Don’t expect that to change. Ignoring this won’t make it go away.

  41. Fast Eddie, I’ve been anything but housebound, since early June. Some of my customers have reopened, so I’ve been able to average about 3 days a week working. I’ve been helping my dad allot. But I’ve also managed to go out to dinner a few times. But life in general is very different then it was in 2019. No bars open, no concerts, no weddings,no funerals, no movies, life is missing allot of what makes life life, if that makes any sense. It wears on the soul. Anger, frustration, sadness, worry, but mainly anger. Not to mention how much income I’ve lost so far. I’m sure there are others out there who feel as I do. They say this is the new normal, this is anything but normal.

  42. Fast Eddie says

Rob p., I know what you mean. There are some things we can try to do to get a taste/glimpse of normalcy in our lives, and I do agree that it’s far from what “normal” should be. It’s getting more and more difficult to tell ourselves and each other to “make the best of it” when many can’t even get close to being reasonably ok. The only thing that will really start to fix this is an effective vaccine, and that seems to still be some time before it will happen.

  43. Thanks Fast Eddie, I’m glad someone kinda gets it.
Driving around, seeing all the closed businesses. Seeing the images of packed hospitals. Seeing miles long lines at impromptu food banks. Worries about loved ones.
Just everything going on now. Knowing who’s to blame, and watching society collapse, and implode.
The sad thing is, that we voted for people to handle situations like this, and they can’t even agree to disagree, leaving millions of families in limbo, wondering if they’ll have a home tommorow, or a meal tonight
The division that grips the country is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. There are currently 27 Republican Senators, and a handful of Democrats, who if they had their way would do absolutely nothing to help. The remaining senators can’t even agree on the simplest of measures. Covid testing is still inadequate, and has actually been slowed.
The United States of America, funny, feels anything but United right now. Things need to change, and they need to change quickly. People need to start considering those around them, rather than just themselves, and start working together for the greater good of our nation.
We can beat this, but not by acting the way we all are now
To everyone who continues to do the right things, wearing a mask, keeping social distancing, washing your hands and staying home when you can…THANK YOU, your sacrifices have helped more than you’ll ever know
To those not doing these easy things WAKE UP, look around, your ignorance is not helping, but rather making things worse for everyone.
The sooner everyone accepts the truth, and works together, the sooner we may gain control of the situation. And maybe, just maybe, thing might return to some semblance of normal.

  44. Fast Eddie, would you trust any vaccine developed under the Trump Administration?

Would you let your loved ones get it?

And if you aren’t afraid of the Trump Administration, pay attention. Trump wants to dump Defense Sec. Esper after the Nov. elections. Why? Trump wants to install a Defense Sec. as corrupt as Barr and Pompeo, so he can use the military to stay in office. If Trump loses the election, he will resort to the military to stay in office.

  45. So far Moderna has only been able to recruit about 6000 volunteers out of the 300000 needed for the phase 3 test if their vaccine. Allot of people are scared to inject an unknown substance into their bodies. This doesn’t help the vaccine situation.
In the meantime ” it is what it is ” is still the answer coming from the White house.
Soon we’ll have to change our national anthem to Queen’s
” Another One Bites The Dust”
This has gone beyond sad, and is just plain pathetic.

  46. “And another one gone, another one gone, another one bites the dust. Hey, it’s gonna get you too, another one bites the dust.

  47. Great…now I’ve got that chorus stuck in my head…please mommy make it stop! LOL
