STAFFORD – Week after week this season Stephen Kopcik was among the frontrunners in the SK Modified division at Stafford Speedway.

Friday the Newtown driver was finally able to dodge the bad luck that his dogged him all year on his mission to find victory lane.

Kopcik went past Tony Membrino Jr. for the lead on lap 18 and never trailed again on the way to victory in the 40-lap SK Modified feature Friday at Stafford Speedway.

It was the first victory of the season for Kopcik.

“We’ve been good all year,” Kopcik said. “This is long overdue. We’ve been fast every week and had some bad luck this year. These guys deserve it standing back there. It’s all because of them. I’ve got great people behind me.”

Todd Owen of Somers was second and Mike Christopher Jr. of Wolcott third.

Kopcik was able to vault from fourth to second following a lap 13 restart before using a low move on lap 18 to get by Membrino for the lead.

“This is awesome,” Kopcik said. “We needed this. I feel like we had a great car tonight. But we’ve had a good car all year. This is awesome. The thing was on rails tonight.”
