Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NASCAR and Riverhead Raceway announced Monday that the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour 200 scheduled for Oct. 17 has been cancelled.

This breaks a 35-year streak of NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour action at the historic quarter-mile oval, a place where NASCAR Hall of Fame drivers like Richie Evans and Mike Stefanik added to their legendary racing resumes.

“We’re heartbroken for the track, our competitors and most importantly our fans who are struggling during this trying time,” said NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Director Jimmy Wilson. “We look forward to when we can return to Riverhead and continue adding to its rich legacy of NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour racing.”

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will continue its season at 6 p.m. ET Saturday at Connecticut’s Stafford Motor Speedway.

It will conclude a nine-race championship schedule on Oct. 11 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park in Connecticut.

Fans can watch both races live on TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold and get the latest news on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour at NASCAR.com/roots.

  1. I am not surprised given the difficulty all the Dirt Tracks in upstate NY have had in running shows with fans. I wonder it they will add another race to the schedule. I know NJ has been allowing fans at Bridgeport. Maybe they can reschedule the Wall show perhaps another race in NH. If they do add another race I hope they dont schedule against Staffords Tri track show. Probably getting too late in the season weather wise.
If they dont add another show there would be 9 races completed assuming they get in the two remaining CT shows. I think they originally announced 17. Honestly not bad considering the circumstances.

  2. CSG, the season ends at Thompson. Nascar informed all the teams yesterday that there will be no more races added. After Thompson we are on to 2021. May she be a whole lot better than 2020.

  3. Thanks JD. I didnt know Nascar announced that they would be ending the season with Thompson. It is typically their season ender so the tradition holds.. Do you know if they are paying out a points fund this year? Did Nascar reduce the payout given they only got in a little more than half the events scheduled. Anyone know how much the Whelen Mod Champion typically gets? I think we all hope for a much better 2021.
