Friday night, June 11, Stan Mertz Racing and driver Woody Pitkat will roll to Stafford Motor Speedway for a big night of Tour-Type Modified racing. Driving the No. 6 Twisted Tea machine, Pitkat will compete in Stafford’s Twisted Tea Open Modified 80 race — an event that he won last year.
Returning back to his home track, where the Connecticut racing veteran has 78 career wins, Pitkat will look to redeem himself from a tough run last time at Stafford. It’s important to Pitkat to build momentum as the team enters the summer stretch — but all eyes will be on this one event for now — as Twisted Tea doesn’t only sponsor the race — but also Stan Mertz Racing.
“Expectations are high but you can’t add any extra stress on yourself,” Pitkat said. “If you do that, you overthink things and could get yourself in trouble. The competition is even higher than it was last year when we won. We’ve been talking about what we feel like we need to do. Obviously you want to go there and win. We just have to do the best we can and hopefully we have no problems and the car starts off the trailer and we have an easier day right from when we unload.”
Stafford’s own SK Modifieds, SK Light Modifieds, Late Models, Limited Late Models and Street Stocks will also join the action on Friday night. As a preview to Saturday’s sold out SRX Racing Experience show, the stars of SRX will also run a 10-minute practice session during the show as a teaser to the next night.
Practice for Stan Mertz Racing begins at 3:45 p.m., in rotation with all other divisions, followed by qualifying heat races at 6 p.m. The green flag for the Twisted Tea Open Modified 80 should drop at approximately 9:15 p.m., and will air live on FloSports.TV.
