LOUDON, N.H. — Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby finished 27th on Saturday, July 17 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The driver of the No. 10 Mayhew Tools machine was forced to pull into the garage early with a motor issue — only completing 44 of the laps in the Whelen 100 in the most prestigious race of the year.

Coby qualified the car in ninth position, and ran inside the top-10 for the entire time that he was on the track. However, after passing Ronnie Williams and closing into the bottom of the top-five, Coby noticed the car didn’t seem up to full power. A few laps later, he decided to pull the car down pit road to the attention of his team and avoid any further damage to the engine.

“The motor was running fine for the most part when we were out there,” Coby said. “I just noticed after I passed a few cars that they were able to stay with me, but they weren’t handling well. It just didn’t feel like it was working down the straightaway. I put my foot down onto the gas off turn four and I could tell something was wrong. Nothing broke and snapped — it was still running — just not sure what happened. But we drove up to fifth and had a better handling car than most of the guys out there at the time. We will just move on to the next one.”

Doug Coby will return to the track at New York International (Lancaster) Speedway on Saturday, July 31, in the eighth race of the season for the Whelen Modified Tour.
