Doug Coby is set to return to Stafford Motor Speedway this Friday, August 6, as the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour invades the half-mile for the eighth race of the season. Coby, a former multiple-time track champion, who is 18th on the all-time track wins list, has 12 of those wins in Whelen Modified Tour competition, and would love to add a lucky 13 in his return to his home track.

Back in April, Coby finished 12th in the NAPA Spring Sizzler, but the finish didn’t showcase the speed that the No. 10 Mayhew Tools machine had that night. Coby was running inside the top-five late when contact between the leaders collected the six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion, forcing him to a finish outside the top-10.

However, in June, Coby scored arguably the biggest win of his career at Stafford in the inaugural Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) event, besting names like Tony Stewart, Bill Elliott and Helio Castroneves. He’s excited to get back to the home track feel and chase the victory in the 30th annual GAF Roofing 150 this Friday night.

Coby will enter the race ninth in the series championship standings, 73 points back from the lead, after missing Oswego Speedway to compete with SRX at Stafford, and also having a motor failure at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. It appears Coby will need some help to chase a seventh title this season, but he isn’t giving up the quest quite yet.

“Generally speaking I feel like when we were at the Spring Sizzler in April we had a car that could have won the race,” Coby said. “We’re going back there with the same car and the same setup, with the motor back from New Hampshire that is fresh and ready to go.”

NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practice will roll from 3:45-4:45 p.m., with Mayhew Tools qualifying set for 6:20 p.m. The green flag for the 30th annual GAF Roofing 150 is set to drop around 9:15 p.m., and will air live on TrackPass via NBC Sports Gold. Drivers will also take part in an autograph session in the grandstand area at 7 p.m. Tickets will also be available at the track for anyone who would like to head to the track to see the race in person.

  1. I hope he has a big, strong shifter.

  2. I know, the Great Coby Shifter crises has consumed the fan base and it’s hard to envision what’s on the horizon. But there will be a great show on Friday with great weather and just about as much racing as one body can stand packed into one night and that can only mean one thing.

With the Pick-em fields indulgence I’d like to swap my first and third place for no other reason then we have a lot of Coby choices for the win and to show a little love for the reigning Champ at a place he’s not been excellent at.
I like to package the picks before the race for quick reference during the race. It just makes the race a little more fun to keep an eye on how everyone is doing as the race in progressing.
Lutz is usually strong at Stafford, Swanson got a top 5 in 2019 at Stafford and it’s now one one of Goodales favorite tracks and he has won there. Given that Lutz has finished in the top 5 in 5 out of the last 6 races at Stafford and was 6th in the 7th it’s surprising only one of us picked the 46.

  16. It’s pretty clear that the Pick-em field thinks Coby will be loaded for bear tonight and will get the win. But how much respect do we pickers give the rest of the field based on frequency we picked then to appear in the top 5 in this race?

    Pick-em Respect-O-meter.
    7ny—5
    10—–5
    85—–5
    6——-4
    51—–4
    07—–3
    3——-2
    46—–1
    58—–1

If you trust we pickers the results of this challenge will shake out something like this.
    Earl—–24
    Jake—-23
    Doug—23
    CSG—22
    Eddie—-20
    Bobf—13

Earl appears to have the best shot at winning and Bobf is the clear dark horse.
If you care to, pick a picker other then yourself you think has the best chance of winning. No scoring, fun factor only.
Mine would be CSG. Coby for the win mainly because he knows Stafford and is pissed. Preece for second because he tested there at the end of July and is taking this race very seriously. Silk
usually does well at Stafford. Earl has the 07 in second respecting his status on the tour, CSG has him in a place more more likely based on the teams history at Stafford last race at the track excepted.

    CSG;;;;;;;;10,6ny,85,07,7ny………Nocella………….Bassette
    Bobf……..10,51,46,58,3……………………………….West
    Liz………..6ny,10,85,51,07……………..Williams…………………….

    Elect???

  20. Doug, my thoughts on Friday night;

Coby will be loaded for bear as this is one of his best tracks. He needs to reassert himself as the threat he previously was and a win tonight would definitely be a boost to him and the team. Points wise unless something crazy happens he won’t get his 7th this year.

Bonsignore only has a 6 point lead over Emerling. It’s JB’s championship to loose and a mulligan this late in the season could be terminal. These guys have to be on their “A” game each and every race for the rest of the season to add another championship trophy to the case. However, Stafford has been his Achilles heel and he doesn’t need to leave the door open so anyone can stick their foot in.

Emerling is having his best season on the WMT only 6 points out of the lead. He is coming into Stafford with momentum after winning Lancaster and winning the last event at Stafford. This is another team that needs to bring their “A” game every week if they want to contend for their first WMT championship. Stafford could be a turning point either way for them however, it may be their best opportunity to make a big move in the points.

    I guess we will see.

    IMHO

  21. Imitation is the finest form of flattery.

I’m flattered that Earl just reiterated what I said about this race, the 51 and 07, and the rest of the season.

    Earl is correct.

  22. Jake…….10,6ny,7ny,85,51………..0+5+1
    Eddy……..85, 7ny, 6ny, 3, 07…….0+3+0
    Doug…….51,85,10,7ny,6nY……….0+5+1
    Earl………10,07,51,85,7ny………0+4+0
    CSG;;;;;;;;10,6ny,85,07,7ny………0+4+0
    Bobf……..10,51,46,58,3…………..0+2+0
    Liz………..6ny,10,85,51,07………3+4+0=WINNER

    Preliminary results
Does each person that picked the most top 5 drivers get 2 points each or is it split if it’s a tie? What the heck I split it giving the lady her second win. She deserved it being the only person to pick the winner.

  23. Congrats on another win Liz!

  24. Look at all those IDIOTS that did not pick Preece. I picked Preece, I was right again.

  25. 🎀 🎀 🎀 Liz Cherokee 🎀 🎀 🎀 says

Thank you again to the real gentlemen for the accolades. I have to read through lots of minutiae related to one defendant, but I do find them!

    Bottoms up boys! 🍻🍻🍻
