Doug Coby rebounded from an early spin and scored a fifth-place finish on Saturday, August 21 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. In the 10th race of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season — the Rumble at the Ridge 200 — Coby qualified the Mayhew Tools machine in fourth spot, and ran inside the top-five for most of the race.

However, after staying out when a few others pitted early, Coby faded towards the bottom of the top-10, and slight contact with another driver sent him spinning on the frontstretch.

After having to drive from the tail of the field, Coby charged back to the front, and ran inside the top-five late, settling for fifth at the checkered flag.

“Good recovery for us. We just over-adjusted on the initial start thinking we needed to be tight for a long run and we guessed wrong,” Coby said. “When we came in for a fresh tire at the end, we loosened the car up, but it was still a little bit too tight. When you’re tight on a track that has no true straightaways like Beech Ridge, it’s tough. I was just hugging the bottom at the end. It wasn’t what we thought we would have been, but really, in the first time here recently for everyone, no one really knew what the right thing to do was. There were a lot of strategies.”

Doug Coby will return to the track with the Whelen Modified Tour on Saturday, September 4 at Oswego Speedway in New York.

The next race for Doug Coby Racing is set for Seekonk Speedway on Wednesday, August 25, in the Speed51.TV Modified Madness, worth $10,000 to the winner. Coby will wheel the No. 10 Reynolds Auto Wrecking/Mayhew Tools machine from the seventh starting position in the 100-lap race.

  1. Once again Jimmy Wilson doesn’t follow the rule book and makes up his owns rules. Car #07 pits and the tire falls off and puts the tire back on out of his pit box. I believe the rule book reads that you must go down 1 lap or go to the longest line, which neither of that took place. But yet he penalizes Colby for 1 lap and Silk go to the longer line in past races.

Why have a rule book if Jimmy Wilson makes up his own rules. Jimmy Wilson really needs to go!!

  2. Jack, I was thinking same thing, Pitted out of the box, end of longest line …..
