Being out front was apparently the only safe place to be on the track Friday in the Late Model division at Stafford.

Kevin Gambacorta passed Andrew Molleur for the lead with five laps remaining to win the 30-lap wreck-marred Late Model feature Friday at Stafford.

It was the third victory of the season for Gambacorta, of Ellington.

Molleur, of Shelton, was second and Darrell Keane of Ellington third.

Gambacorta and Molleur were able to stay in front of the carnage behind them to set up the late battle for the win.

Molleur went to the front 12 laps in and looked on the way to his second win of the season. But Gambacorta was able to find the lane under him with five laps remaining.

“I knew we could get him, it would just take a few laps,” Gambacorta said. “It finally worked out for us. It’s just an unbelievable opportunity to drive this car this year. Our car was pretty good, but it’s nothing like this. Thanks to [car owner Andy Marchese].”
