Losing his full-time ride on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour has apparently made Craig Lutz the most popular hired gun around of late.

Two weeks ago Lutz found out that after four plus years driving for team owner Russell Goodale that his ride was going away.

In the first series event after finding out the team he drove for was shutting down Lutz landed a one-race dea with Danny Watts Racing for the Whelen Modified Miller Lite 200 last Saturday at Riverhead.

Lutz, who was filling in for Anthony Nocella with the DWR, ended up 23rd at Riverhead after getting involved in a wreck. Nocella, who was competing at Star Speedway in Epping, N.H. last weekend with the Internatonal SuperModified Assocation, returns to his DWR ride for Saturday’s season ending NAPA Fall Final 150 at Stafford Speedway.

But it doesn’t mean Lutz will be back on the sidelines for the event.

The Miller Place, N.Y. driver has landed another one-race deal the NAPA Fall Final 150, this time landing in a second car for Dave Sapienza Racing.

Lutz scored his first career Whelen Modified Tour victory in the 2019 NAPA Fall Final 150 at Stafford. In 16 series starts at Stafford Lutz has six top-five’s and 11 top-10 finishes.

The addition of Lutz brings the entry list for the Whelen Modified Tour season ending event to 27 cars.

  1. Hey Liz, this is a huge threat to the 01… Lutz and Fifield are separated by just 17 points. Big car count, Lutz is running in a good car, the 01 is, well, the 01… looks like the 01 could be knocked out of the top 15 in points. It could be close. The 01 is gonna have to find that extra speed to stay ahead of Lutz. Well, it would be a huge improvement if the 01 would finish just half the laps scheduled.

How long do you think the 01 will last?

  2. Someone needs to put Lutz in a car for the big 300 at THOMPSON!!!!

  3. Class move by Sapienza putting Lutz in one of his cars for the Fall Final so he can finish up the season. Your a good man Dave!

  4. Viva Race Fan says

    01 Rocks .
Great job Dave Aces to you .
    Good luck Craig .
    Don’t be a hater .

  5. If the point fund $$$$ is based on owner points then the only threat to the 01 is the 2. Wouldn’t any owner points Lutz gets on Sunday go to the 63? Good to see the 78 and 01 getting some love at the pay window this season

The big 300!? All of a sudden every team and their brother can afford 12-14 tires and has a pit crew for live green flag stops.

  6. If the 01 & 78 want some love at the pay window then they should run up front and earn it just like everyone else has to.
