STAFFORD – The reigning champ is back on top of the SK Light Modified point standings at Stafford Speedway.

Defending SK Light Modified champion Brian Sullivan came into Friday night’s racing card at Stafford in rally mode, sitting second in the division standings, six points behind Alexander Pearl.

Sullivan diced from a 13th starting spot to make a late move for the lead and win the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature Friday at Stafford.

It was the fourth victory of the season for Sullivan, of South Windsor, and launched him over Pearl back to the top of the division standings with two events remaining.

“We had to go,” Sullivan said. “We’ve been in this position before. Go out there and do the best we can and let the points figure themselves out.”

Mark Bakaj of Lebanon was second and Peter Bennett of Cromwell third.

Pearl ended up fifth and now sits two points behind Sullivan. Derek Debbis, who came into the night 10 points off the division lead, was sixth and is now 12 points behind Sullivan.

Bakaj went by Bennett for the lead on an early restart. Sullivan deftly weaved up to the front pack and got to Bakaj on lap 17. On lap 18 Sullivan got under Bakaj and the pair went side-by-side the line. Sullivan cleared Bajak for the lead off of turn two on lap 19.

“It’s every once in a while you actually have a car like that,” Sullivan said. “I’ve never had a car that I could get through the field like that. That was great. We’ve been waiting for that one for a while.”
