In his return to Virginia two decades after graduating from the University of Richmond, Doug Coby grabbed a top-five finish at Richmond Raceway on Friday, September 10. Coby drove the No. 10 Mayhew Tools entry to a fifth-place finish in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Virginia is For Racing Lovers 150 after running inside the top-10 inside the final half of the race.

It wasn’t the win that Coby was hoping for, but overall, it was a strong night for the Milford, Connecticut native in the owner’s championship standings. Even though Coby missed the Whelen Modified Tour event at Oswego Speedway in June, Chase Dowling drove the car to a top-10 finish that night, which gained the Doug Coby Racing team crucial owner points.

Now, with both Justin Bonsignore and Patrick Emerling having issues during the Richmond event, Coby’s team is just over 20 points out of the lead with two races remaining.

“Leaving Richmond with a fifth-place finish was kind of a blessing because I didn’t feel like we would have a car that could run there early in the race,” Coby said. “My team made some great adjustments on the pit stops and we restarted 14th towards the end and drove up to fifth. I think we could have finished anywhere from second to 10th in that race. I didn’t really think about points while the race was going on, but my goal has been to get second in the owner points. With Justin and Patrick having problems, it makes the owner’s championship mathematically possible, but 20 points is still a strong number. We will just do what we can in the last two races.”

Doug Coby will return to the track twice in the next week, with his first stop coming at Bristol Motor Speedway on Thursday, September 16. Coby will make his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut for GMS Racing at the Tennessee oval. Following that, Coby will look to sweep the final NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Riverhead Raceway on Saturday, September 18. Coby won the first two tour races of the year at the New York bullring in May and June.
