Even though he has no previous laps at Richmond Raceway, in many ways, Doug Coby is returning to his second home this Friday, September 10. Coby, who graduated from the University of Richmond in 2001, is set for action in the Virginia is For Racing Lovers 150 at the three-quarter mile oval under the lights.

The six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion knows that the race is a crown jewel event on the 2021 schedule, and is hoping he can park the No. 10 Mayhew Tools machine in Victory Lane. On a night where many fans in the stands might be cheering Coby on, the veteran will look to continue his climb up the championship standings with only three races to go in the season.

After missing one event, Coby has climbed back to fourth, just 74 points from the lead. More importantly, Coby is just 17 points out of third, and the Doug Coby Racing machine is just 38 points back of the lead in the owner’s championship battle. All eyes will be on winning at Richmond for Coby, who is excited to head back to some of his roots.

“The Whelen Modified Tour was regularly going to Richmond back when I was in school there and when I started running full-time in 2003, Richmond was off the schedule,” Coby said. “I never got the chance to turn laps there and it was definitely disappointing. To get back there, it’s exciting. I’m going to spend some time with some friends after the race. I’m going back to somewhere that was a second home for a long time for me. The track is highly regarded by everyone in the racing industry. I’m hoping that I will be able to lean on some Iowa Speedway testing experience I had a few years ago in order to figure out how to get around there. It’s a similar feeling on a much larger track, but completely different from a mile. We are hoping the Mayhew Tools machine is a contender for the win.”

The race day schedule for the Virginia is For Racing Lovers 150 includes one practice session from 1:30-3 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools pole qualifying at 5 p.m. The feature race is expected to green at 7 p.m., live on NBC Sports Gold through TrackPass. For those in the area, tickets are available in advance and will also be available at the track. For more information on the event, visit RichmondRaceway.com.
