Doug Coby Racing announced today the addition of champion crew chief John McKenna to the team for the 2022 season, while also announcing a seven-race Modified schedule. The team is tentatively set to run four NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour events and three Open Modified races – filling out a schedule where the ultimate goal will be to capture the trophy. The team also announced the return of Mayhew Tools as the primary sponsor of the No. 10 Modified.

The addition of McKenna will provide the chance for Coby and McKenna to rekindle a successful relationship they shared for many years. When Phil Moran left Doug Coby Racing to pursue other opportunities at the end of the 2021 season, Coby and McKenna teamed up for the Haunted Hundred Tri Track race at Seekonk Speedway to close the year. From there, the two spoke and came up with a plan for 2022.

When Coby and McKenna first worked together at the 2010 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season-finale, Coby didn’t even know who McKenna was. One year later, they won at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park together, as Coby split the season between McKenna and another crew chief. In 2012, the two took off – winning five races and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship with car owner Wayne Darling. A year later, they won two events and finished inside the top-10 in all but three races, coming up just short of a second straight championship.

“I didn’t know John, I actually thought another one of the other crew members was John McKenna,” Coby joked. “I walked into the shop and was introduced to him and we started working together. When Phil decided to head in a different direction, my top priority was finding someone out there who I knew I wanted to work with. I want to go to the race track with John. His overall approach to racing is something I love. He’s crafty and is always trying different things. He has a lot of full-fendered experience on top of his Modified experience and the both of us together just try to do whatever makes the most sense in each situation. It’s a great experience working with him because you know he’s always thinking about absolutely everything on the car and at the track. He has a great eye.”

The decision to scale back for 2022 is one that both Coby and McKenna are comfortable with due to obligations outside of racing. However, Coby is open to additional opportunities to drive other events during the year if they do become available to him. The announced modified schedule is just the confirmed events Coby’s modified team will race in during the 2022 season.

“I have a few things to get organized with the team and that is what led me to the decision to not force the puzzle pieces together to make the full year. My priority for 2022 is to get back acquainted with John and do what is manageable for all of us, including my crew members, to continue building a winning team. Whether we run the Tour full-time again in the future or not, we have to see how things evolve over time,” Coby continued. “I’m really thankful to have a strong commitment from John Lawless and Eric Mills at Mayhew Tools, and Kim Berube at Reynold’s Auto Wrecking. They make it possible for the No. 10 team to race and we hope to bring home some more wins for them this season.”

The 2022 schedule for Doug Coby Racing will begin in April at Stafford Motor Speedway for the 50th running of the NAPA Spring Sizzler on April 23-24, where the race winner of the 100-lap special will leave with a minimum of $15,000. From there, the team will compete in the $15,000 to win Open Modified race at Claremont Motorsports Park on Friday, May 27.

One month later, on Wednesday, June 29, Coby will join the Tri Track Open Modified Series teams at Seekonk Speedway for the annual $10,000 to win Open Wheel Wednesday, of which Coby is a three-time winner. He will follow that up with his first of four NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races during the year, competing at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 16.

From there, the team will run both NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on Thursday, August 17 and Saturday, October 8 as part of the World Series of Speedway Racing. The Doug Coby Racing season will conclude at Martinsville Speedway on Thursday, October 27 in the Whelen Modified Tour finale.

  1. Smart approach for the 10 team, plan a limited schedule of races and if you have good results and the cars stay together. add more as you go along. Seems to be the plan a lot of the teams are following this year..

  2. “The decision to scale back for 2022 is one that both Coby and McKenna are comfortable with due to obligations outside of racing. However, Coby is open to additional opportunities to drive other events during the year if they do become available to him. ”

Hmmm…. obligations outside of racing prevent him from running more than a small portion of the schedule, and at the same time, he’s open to opportunities to drive other events should they arise.

Wants to spend more time with the family?

    🚨 🤥🤥🤥🤥🤥🤥🤥🤥🤥🤥🤥🤥 🚨

It’s like this gem posted by Don Trump Jr. last week, “I can’t lie to you guys. This election is going to be a tough one so it is REALLY important we hear from you. We need you to take the Official 2022 Nationwide Census. Take 2 mins and get it done.” Followed by a fundraising link. Yeeeeaaahhhhh… Riiiiiight… Can’t lie, 🤥 and the official Census takes place in years ending in ZERO. This is 2022. That posting had a link to go to a Trump non-tax deductible fund raising site, not an Official Nationwide Census. He says he can’t lie. Can’t even believe that.

    😝😝😝😝😝😝 🤥 🤥 🤥 🤥 🤥 🤥 🤥

  3. Goodfella now you call Coby a liar? He must keep you up at night. Is that your best or do you have more? Coby is really in your head lol

  4. Racer, if it looks, smells, sounds, and walks like a duck, it’s a duck. You can call it whatever you want. You calling Don Jr. a liar? 🤥

REALLY????? THIS year????? Yeah, like every team starts the season thinking they have a shot at the championship, and they just play it by ear for a while to see how things go. That’s absurd. In reality, as borne out by the STATISTICS every season, the championship competition is usually between 2-3 cars. How many times has the last race of the season had multiple cars all in legitimate contention? Once? Twice? The season is often locked a couple races before the season is over, and the rest are racing for 2nd, 3rd, etc. The rest of the cars are field fillers. When a team does not run the entire season, it’s because they do not have the FUNDING and necessary support. Or they are just big boys playing with big cars as a hobby. The facts show that like ~13 cars run the entire season, just ~3 of those have a chance at the championship, and the rest, often dozens, run part time. It’s been that way for decades.

    It’s ALL ABOUT THE 💵 💰 💸🤑.

Or they want to spend more time with their families.

Still perplexing as to why a top tier owner doesn’t want to take on Dug Colby.

What ever happened with that truck ride audition?

  5. Goodfella now that you got all that out of your system maybe tonight when you dream about Coby tomorrow you can post more Coby facts lol can’t wait.

  6. I don’t know man. If detective Courchesne has connected the dots properly this Coby schedule might end up making perfect sense. The dots may be faint but I put pins in them anyway looking forward to the driver announcement for the SRX series.
Regardless, the limited schedule might be considered a disappointment in some quarters or some kind of evidence of the demise of the NWMT but I don’t see it that way. It confirms that the NWMT is an open series even if they haven’t admitted it yet. Although I think they kind of have considering the money thrown at the New Smyrna opener. As for Coby he’s just doing what the current structure of events is rewarding teams for. Pick and choose what is right for your team.
This could be better if you think about it. Before Coby and Bonsignor were isolated focusing almost exclusively on the NWMT. Now Coby who clearly brings the juice a little like Hirschman in that when he drives through the gates the event gets better. Starting with the Sizzler.

  7. Hey Dumbreal I was merely pointing out the landscape of the state of modified racing today and not the WMT exclusively, Sorry to upset you, NOT!

  8. Would love to see Coby improve his championship legacy with NASCAR,, but,, being an owner\driver is a whole new ballgame.. Things become not so much fun and more expensive very quickly.. Perhaps he could combine resources with someone else,, but,, would have to give something to gain something,, this can be hard to do in northeast.. Doug still has good years ahead of him,, am rooting for him to figure it out..

And stupid gets stupider. You should have not responded and confirmed what was already obvious.

    Landscape? Another Rudy Giuliani. 😝😝😝😝😝
