THOMPSON – On April 2 at the Icebreaker at Thompson Speedway Stephen Kopcik celebrated a huge achievement in winning the Sunoco Modified feature at the track.

It was the first career victory at the historic venue for Kopcik, of Newtown.

Wednesday Kopcik went from first-time winner to streaking winner.

Kopcik drove away from Todd Owen over the closing laps to get his second consecutive victory at the track in the 30-lap Sunoco Modified feature Wednesday at Thompson Speedway.

“Everyone is good [here],” Kopcik said. “It’s not easy. I can’t thank these guys enough standing behind me. That’s the reason we’re here.”

Owen, of Somers, was second and Keith Rocco of Wallingford third.

“It was a good finish,” Owen said. “It was fun racing up there with the top three guys. I’ve definitely got some homework to do to try to get one spot better. I’ve got to thank all my guys for coming here and putting up with this crazy schedule that I do. My Stafford car is in one piece so it makes me feel better.”

Rocco led the opening stages of the event. On lap nine Owen made a bid for the lead but Rocco was able to fend him off. Owen’s attack opened the door for Kopcik to move to second place.

On lap 10 Kopcik got by Rocco into turn three but Rocco was able to fight back and regain the lead off of turn four. On the next lap it was Kopcik once again making the bid for the lead through turn three and he was able to come off turn four with a lead he wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the way.

“We fell off hard, I don’t know why,” Rocco said. “We had a really stout piece in the heat race, I was excited.”

Great battle between the top three for almost 1/2 the race!

  4. Too bad they had poor car count across the board. But having said that, damn Kopcik can sure wheel a race car. That move into turn three was a thing of beauty
